I am fed up of having a quarter of my entire life ruined by PMS. How did you cure yours?

For ten days before my period I am bloated, unable to sleep, paranoid, tired, argumentative, aggressive and depressed. It is horrible for me and for my family. It affects everything about my life in a negative way.

Is there anything I can do about it? I am considering medication, has anyone taken anti depressants for this reason?

I limit caffeine and refined sugar already.

Sounds awful.

Sadly, I cured it by having a premature menopause at 38/39.

Hope someone else comes along to help!

Mine was cured with taking Agnus Castus. I really know when I have missed them. It says take 4 tablets but I only take one and that works.

Do you feel better now weegiemum?

I will try it Fab. Is it homeopathy? Or herbal?

Hugely!!!!

the hot flushes are receding (in fact 63 yo mil has more than I do!) and I feel brilliant. I have a period about every 6 months. No migraines, no PMT, no bloating, just a bit of bleeding and then back to normal.

My bones will be powder when I am 95, but I now like having a prem menopause!

By having children. And then when I began peri-menopause it came back.

Sorry, not very helpful! I wonder whether the pill might help? I know women who took it in order to cope with their periods, rather than for contraception.

Before havign children, the most effective treatments I found were Vit B6 (Pyridoxine) and hypnotherapy.

You wouldn't be taking the dose on the bottle, but finding your own personal dose. I began by taking the dose on the bottle, then increasing it every day until I could smell it in my urine (a strong yeasty smell, IIRC). The dose was the minimum it took for me to smell it in my urine, and for only the last 7-10 days before my period. It should have been only 7 days, but I wasn't precisely regular.

The hypnotherapy was to teach me to self-hypnotise and enter a relaxation trance. I would do it every day at first, then less and less often until I was only doing it during the week of PMT. But it was a habit that needed to be maintained and I got lazy. It only works while you do it and you need to dedicate some time to learning it.

here I take the tablets.

HumphreyCobbler · 19/04/2010 18:12

Thank you so much.

I will be trying both remedies.

I have got worse since having children sadly!

I cured my PMS and heavy periods by having the Marina Coil...

It's not for everyone though and i do know that it has made some folks PMS worse.

PortBlacksandDweller · 19/04/2010 18:41

Mirena not Marina - there is not a flotilla of small pleasure boats up there...

TheHappyCamper · 19/04/2010 19:36

Another vote for agnus castus here. It has worked a treat for me. I take the 1000mg tablets.
