Prolonged Hiccups

I know this may sound trivial but my poor DH has had hiccups for almost 48 hours now.

They stop now and again for 10 maybe 15 minutes 3 or 4 times in 24hours but thats it.

Last night we went to bed and neither of us could sleep because of his hiccups. They must have stopped because at 3.30 this morning I woke upto him hiccupping in his sleep. He woke at 4am and just got up as they would not stop.

He has been to work today and ever since he came in at 6pm he has been non stop all evening again. He said he has had them all day with a brief respite. He is asleep now and they seem to have stopped but its only been 10 minutes.

He could be stressed - probably is - although generally is a very laid back person. We are moving house over 120 miles away next week and the following week he starts a new job. In the midst of moving we also have his brothers wedding to attend up north this weekend.

Do you think its stress related? He is in his early 40's but fit and healthy (has to be for his job).

Can anyone suggest a way to make hiccups stop, advise at all or share experiences please.

I suggest you pop him off to the GP and get him checked over.

a teaspoon of vinegar works for me! I don't get them as bad as your DH but I can get them for upto an hour and vinegar seems to work! Bizarre I think it must shock the system into stopping! Got to be worth a shot!

He wont go to the GP!! Typical bloke!

There has been a slight improvement today with more breaks between bouts but as I type he is hiccupping away!

Just hope we get a better nights sleep tonite.

Anyway just bumping incase anyone has a miracle cure or some info.

Thanks to those who have replied!

He should go and see the GP. A constant hiccup can be a sign of something sinister in the brain stem so it really should be checked out.

Did you watch the BBC1 documentary about the man that had the hiccups for 3 years??

Hi, that must be grim.

tell him to sit quietly and breathe as normally as possible, maybe a bit shallowly, and tell him you've got the cure for hiccups off mn

tell him you'll start when after the next hiccup. then you and he sit quietly and wait for the next hiccup

if the next hiccup comes tell him it was the wrong sort and to wait patiently for the next hiccup, the sooner the better

generally, the hiccup doesn't come. for regular hiccups this is a sure fire cure. after 48 hours, i don't know. worth a try though.

oh my gosh -- this was wednesday!

I sure hope they've stopped by now
