Sore hips. Am I just getting old?

I find if I lie on one side for too long at night, my hip gets really sore. the right is worse than the left.

Is it just cos I'm old? (40)

you might have some early arthritis or crepitation in your hip. Ask doc to sent you for an xray

Sorry its so late, didn't want it to go unanswered.

Completely impossible to advise without seeing you, go to your GP if worried at all.
Some qu's a GP might ask you are:

Does the pain go away when you move/get up and walk about?

Does it happen at other times? (not just lying down)

Is it the same type of pain R and L? despite not lying on one side?

If you're thinking its age-related changes, then you'd probably notice the pain more on weight-bearing activities (like walking for too long).

Hope that helps.

Not everything is due to age you know!

If the pain is localised and tender over one spot, it might be a bursitis/tendonitis around the hip joint.

But again - do go to your GP if worried and if it doesn't settle

I was convinced I had an arthritic hip I was in such pain, but I actually had a lower back problem.
Couldn't lie on my right side at all, though now more or less cured through pilates exercises & a brilliant chiropractor
Same age ( very old )

Hmm.

thanks ladeeees.

Arthritis seems a bit drastic! I think I'll try and rule out a few other things first.

It gets better when I'm not lying on it, not instantly though, and it has been sore all day today.

Left side is absolutely fine, as I say.

It comes and goes. Can be fine for a couple of months then comes back. I think.

DH is delighted cos it means I lie facing away from him, so I don't snore in his ears! But it is quite uncomfortable so I wiggle more.

wonder if you have trapped your sciatic nerve. Have you got pain in the middle of your buttock

MaryMotherOfManchego · 07/04/2010 21:53

Nah, it feels very jointy. No pain anywhere else.

If it helps I get it terribly and I'm only 25! I've suffered with my hips for a long time before pregnancy and since I've had my son the pain has spread to back pain and very often leg pain. My doctor has now referred me to a phsio. I'd say it's worth seeing your doctor and explaining! Good luck (I'm still waiting for my appointment so can't tell you if it's done any good!)
