Anyone with hyperprolactinemia?

Hi, I have had the above (which I have trouble spelling!) since I was in my teens which is a long time and two kids ago now. I have another long term problem with anxiety and often wonder if the two are linked. Post DS2 and stopping BFing I am now being assessed for my prolactin levels. I am really interested to make contact with anyone who has this and the combined issue with anxiety. I am also going to post in MH in case I am in the wrong place, thanks in advance. It may sound unbelievable but I have never made the hyper/anxiety link before now.

Do you take any meds for your anxiety? Some drugs like trifluoperazine have this as a side effect.

Hiya falafel, yep I could give you a list of the main ones over the years (varied and many) but currently on amitryptaline low dose as was BFing until recently.....do you have this too?

I took trifluoperazine for anxiety as a teenager and I had hyperprolacinaemia as a result- was incredibly disturbing to find myself leaking milk- my mum wouldn't believe me when I said I wasn't pregnant! I think she thought I had had some sort of concealed pregnancy. It stopped when I came off the drugs though, they monitored my prolactin levels for a while then left it and it has not recurred.

I think amitriptyline has been linked to raised serum prolactin levels but am surprised that the doctor hasn't immediately picked up on this if so- has it perhaps been eliminated as a possible cause? What has the doctor said about it?

Hi Falafel, thanks for talking to me. I probably never explained properly but the hyperprolactinamia came first some 25 years ago and I was the same as you leaking milk in early teens and KNEW I wasn't pregnant. In my time I have had bromocriptine (hated the side effects) HRT when in my mid twenties (I loved it!) and another one since which I have forgotten name off until I got pregnant in my late thirties. The amytriptiline is only in the last month as I was really anxious after having DS2. Now having stopped BFing I am being re-assessed but they had to wait till the mild dried up.

Oops last line should read 'milk dried up'.

Right, so it sounds more like its down to a hormone disturbance than drug related then.

How long do you need to wait for results?

Hiya, two weeks had the bloods taken yesterday when DS2 had his injections. Going to ask the consultant then. Anyone else with this disorder? Never met anyone so would be interested......

Don't really know anything more about it apart from what I have already said but bumping for you in case someone else can help.
