Sudden weight gain?

Am posting on MN before I convince myself I am ill - so straight talking please!
I have put on a stone in four weeks. During that time I have been eating the same as before (in fact I have been eating less for the past two weeks as my clothes get tighter and tighter) and have been doing the same level of exercise (not much, twenty minutes of brisk walking each day).
Googling has me convinced I have hypothyroidism (I am also knackered and have horrible, heavy periods) but I am loathe to go to the GP if it turns out it is just middle-aged spread.
I am almost 36 and now weigh 11st 7. I am definitely NOT pregnant.

Does anyone have any experience with this or any wise words?
Thanks.

Lol, I think it is, but I am quite quick to the doctors and I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar.
I have an appointment with him next week anyway to discuss my periods. He is a lovely man, but I think he gets a bit frustrated with me googling stuff...

A stone in four weeks is quite a lot for an underactvive thyroid, especially in the absense of other symptoms - cold intolerance, coarse skin, hair changes. It's possible to get this kind of quick weight gain with a rapidly enlarging ovarian cyst - these can reach many punds in weight! However, this would usually give you a sense of abdominal swelling/bloatedness.
Go see your GP and explain you are worried and ask them to check you thyroid function Simple blood test, result in a few days) and have a porod at your tummy just to make sure there's no swelling there. They won't mind - you won't be wasting their time.

I would say get your thyroid checked, your GP won't think you are silly, that is a lot of weight to put on in a short time.My thyroid is borderline underactive,I get a lot of chesty coughs,I am tired and chilly and I find it hard to lose weight. You are a bit young for it to be middle aged spread, which any way would happen over a longer period.Hope you are ok!

Do get your blood pressure checked. sudden Weight gain is often due to retaining fluid, so there is an outside chance it may be your heart - unlikely but worth checking, especially if you have a cough.

I would advise dicsussing with your GP
