Help - enormous stye

Montifer · 17/03/2010 22:31

I've got a horrible stye on my eye, has been brewing for a couple of weeks.

Got chloramphenicol ointment from GP a week ago which didn't seem to make much difference but since bathing it with hot salt water over the last few days it has gone from a throbbing red sore lump to a horrid white headed monster.

Do I just have to wait for it to subside?

Do styes usually pop
It does look like a giant spot which is waiting to erupt.

I'm scared to go to bed, any advice gratefully received

i have no idea but if i had something that looked like a giant spot i'd probably have to give it a squeeze!

Montifer · 17/03/2010 22:36

That's my gut feeling, but you know how squeezed spots sometimes bleed a bit....

bleeding eyes

Really don't want to go to work tomorrow with giant white spot on lower eyelid though

sounds vile. pop it. and post before and after pics on here for our edification.

did you try the golden eye?

thisisyesterday · 17/03/2010 22:41

what's worse? bleeding eye or giant spot eye? go on... you know you want to!

i know nothing about styes and whether or not squeezing them is a good idea!

glitterkitty · 17/03/2010 22:45

Or maybe draw pupil on giant spot for intriguing 'double eye' effect?

Then stare at colleagues a lot?

MrsBadger · 17/03/2010 22:47

if yo do, use a sterile needle to pierce the head and then squeeze
otherwise you can drive the yuck backwards rather than out and make it worse.

KurriKurri · 17/03/2010 22:48

has the spot got an eyelash growing out of it? if so can you gently pull that out with tweezers and pus should come out.

Montifer · 17/03/2010 22:48

Thanks for your replies - I think

Consulting medical-ish sites, the consensus seems to be DO NOT squeeze, so back to the hot flannels before bed and a good slathering of ointment.

Trouble is it's like having a layer of vaseline over your eyeball making everything totally blurry, bedtime reading off the agenda again.

Bloody styes (this is the 3rd in the last couple of months) hope pigs don't move in overnight

Sorry, x post with MrsB and Kurri, not sure if I'm brave enough to poke near my eye with a needle and don't think it is eyelash related, the beginning of the swelling seems much lower down.

Your just going to have to wear an eyepatch.

Can you channel your inner pirate?
