Gum disease...

I brush my teeth morning and night without fail, but while i was pregnant i had a really sensitive gag reflex so didn't brush properly. My gums have been receding for a while now because i used to brush quite hard to make sure all the plaque was gone..now the gum around one of my teeth has receded a lot and is a red line along where the tooth starts in the gum. Its very sensitive and there is a little red patch on the gum next to that tooth too My gums don't bleed at all when brushing so im hoping thats a good sign? I visit the dentist every 6 months but the last time i went i was 5 months pregnant and felt rubbish so didn't make an appointment with the hygeinist.

Im really worried about this now, and i can't get into the dentist until next wednesday! (they are booked up) In the meantime im brushing very carefully and i have some corsadyl mouthwash to use but it burns my tounge...

Anyone else having these problems? Im worrying day and night, constantly looking at my gums Worried about gum disease and losing my teeth Would be glad to hear from anyone who has the same problem? Thanks

Corsodyl mouth wash. Brilliant stuff, they have one especially for gum problems. Go to your pharmacy, they'll have it there.

Hope it gets better soon x

Maybe, when i was preg with ds2 i had a similar problem. But because of my irrational fear of dentists and also one making a bad decision i am now undergoing a lot of work to repair 4 very broken teeth.

Are you flossing aswell? Really important to floss though tape is better or the small brushes which you can get at the dentist.

Thanks teaandcake. I will keep up the corsodyl. I just have the normal mint one, is there a different one for my problem? Im going shopping this morning so will look.

Thelady, oh dear I am also scared to death of the dentist and have to drag myself there. Do you think its common in pregnancy/afterwards then? I feel awful about it and really worried

My dentist told me corsodyl gel rubbed directly onto the gums when I had gingivitis after pg (prob for same reason as you)

My gums had gone back to palest pink/white in no time. (now I o/d on the stuff for a week or so before a checkup )

MB my dentist said it was more common than people thought.
He said that hormones and babies needing calcium help ruin teeth during prenancy. and also gum disease, tooth probs can also be genetical...

In both my pregnancies my teeth suffered, especially in early pregnancy. I thought it was the stomach acid from being sick so much (TMI) but maybe it's just that your body is giving so much to the baby Ended up with one filling (new one) after both pregnancies.

I thought that was why the government gave free NHS card thingy during and after pregnancy in the UK? As they recognised that our bodies take a beating with growing a baby

There's is definitely a specific Corsodyl for gum problems but maybe you already have it.

choclab · 17/03/2010 08:41

dont use corsodyl for longer than a 7/10 days as will become less effective .
I suffer with bleeding gums to , i now go to hygenist every 3 months and floss brush with electric toothbrush now and things are improving .. but you have to keep at it ..

good luck

Really try not to worry too much. I had bad recession in one area and went to see a periodontist to have the root planed on one of my teeth (it was hell and expensive) but I still have my tooth.

Thanks for the replies! I was looking at corsodyl gel this morning, wish i'd picked it up now! I got some new toothpaste, colgate sensitive pro-relief...is that any good do you think? Will give it a try anyway.

Sailorsgal, what did they do? why was it hell? Do i really want to know...shudder yes i do!

Thanks for that choclab i didn't know it becomes less effective after a week or so..My gums arn't bleeding at all, is that good news??

Are the gums supposed to be bright red and swollen/bleeding with gum disease?? Mine arn't, just a few tiny red patches along the gumline..

Thanks for all your help, i feel a little better afte eading that its very common!
