Question about diabetes

Pumphreydidit · 12/03/2010 09:26

Apologies for asking such silly questions about diabetes but I have no idea and dare not Google.

Can diabetes manifest due to putting a lot of extra weight on and would it go away if the weight was lost?

Can it make you feel overwhelmingly tired?

Thank you.

Are you talking about Type 1 or type 2?

Pumphreydidit · 12/03/2010 09:56

I honestly do not know.

I have had some tests done but GP phoned this morning wanting to do more tests and saying that she wondered if it was diabetes.
Am extremely worried.

Is it just tiredness, are you always thirsty?

My DH has pre diabet type 2 which as you say can be controlled with weight loss, diet etc. Don't worry.

ppeatfruit · 12/03/2010 10:10

To control the tiredness,. You could try cutting out wheat it works for my DH.

Pumphreydidit · 12/03/2010 10:13

Thanks ppeatfruit.

I drink gallons of water (and have done for years) but recently the water does not quench the thirst. I could sleep anywhere and always feel on the verge of nodding off.

It is hard to lose the extra weight when there is no energy to exercise.

Pumphrey, i am type 2 diabetic and have been for a few years, if your thirst isnt being quenched and you are exhausted these are both classic symptoms of diabetes. However they are also symptomatic of other things too so wait until your doctor finishes the tests before worrying.

Even if you do turn out to be a type 2 please dont worry as it can be controlled via diet and pills before you get onto anything like insulin. I have had gestational diabetes in all of my pregnancies and it went away afterwards but in this last one they think that i had had type 2 for a while before i got pg, perhaps 5 years or more as there was an 11 year gap between DD and my DS. I am really overweight and am trying to do something about it as i have been told that if i lost weight i could go back to normal blood sugar levels. At the moment i am trying the slimming world programme as its supposed to be quite good for type 2 diabetics

Good luck and i hope your doctor gets to the bottom of it, let us know how you get on ok?

Pumphreydidit · 12/03/2010 11:08

Thank you

It was never something that crossed my mind as I always drank lots of water and thought the tiredness was due to our toddler!

I have to do an overnight fast next week but will ask GP about weight loss as it is such a struggle. Will let you know how it goes once the results come back.

Check for thyroid function as well.

rosieposey · 12/03/2010 11:18

Ok will keep my fingers crossed for you

It could well be tiredness due to your toddler but i have to say when my dad got type 2 in his 70's i knew because he was constantly thirsty and it was me that told him to go to the doctors as i had had that experience in my first 2 pgs.

Funnily enough i had no real symptoms at all that i had developed type two before
my 4th pg so was a bit when the consultant told me that he thought i didnt actually have GD this time but that i had probably had type 2 for a while preceeding the pg.

With regards to the weightloss in some areas GP's will authorise 10 weeks free attendence to Slimming World as its such a healthy eating plan, i also asked about Xenical which helps your weight loss as well, if you want some support (god knows i need it sometimes) there is a slimming world thread on here that lots of people post on (ive been lurking for a while and will start to post once ive got a better handle on my diet)

Sadly i have been overweight/obese for 19 years and as my dad had type 2 and my mum who is now 70 had pre diabetes i should have done something a while ago about my weight before the diabetes kicked in, hopefully this year will be my year

Pumphreydidit · 12/03/2010 11:59

I love you all.

This has been hugely helpful as it was a worry receiving a phonecall from the GP then not being able to see her until next week.
Will ask for thyroid function too.

Have cut out wheat as from two hours ago.
