Hi guys

Loathe to google search cos have been in panic since saturday when I received a letter from nurse at GP's surgery saying they've received results of smear which 'unfortunately shows some abnormalities' and they've referred me to colposcopy clinic.

Unfortunately they enclosed a standard leaflet which in it talks about repeat smears and that referral to colposcopy clinic will be made on moderate or severe dyskaryosis

I can't see GP till this afternoon, but am a bit shaky .. if I do a google search I'll see the worst possible .. I need to know other people's experiences of this (good or bad) if possible

sorry if rambly and long ..

scared twig

Oh, what a shock to get the letter - they really don't go into much detail. do they? I went through this - and freaked, but in the end it was all very insignificant - I had some form of treatment - I forget which - after which they said I would never be at risk from cervical cancer (and CIN ISN'T cancer, just cells which might turn cancerous), because it destroys the thin line of cells where it develops.

It's not the most fun you've had with your legs apart, but not too traumatic, either.
But worrying all the same, poor you.

I'm glad you're feeling reassured a bit Twiglett. How long will you have to wait, do you know?

sansouci · 19/07/2005 11:40

I had it done about 10 yrs ago under general anasthetic. Nothing to it! Have had 2 babies since, so no problems with fertility. am checked once a year for reappearance of abnormal cells but so far so good. Don't fret! i'm glad for you that it's been detected!

Twiglett · 19/07/2005 11:44

thanks all

I'm really not so bothered about it now that I know what its all about .. its lack of knowledge that gets to me

colposcopy booked for August 8th so only a couple of weeks to wait .. mmm really looking forward to that

Not too long then, and then you'll be sorted.

spidermama · 19/07/2005 12:02

I've had exactly the same thing, so has my mum, so has my sister, (letter about 'abnormal cells') and further tests showed there was nothing to worry about.

I'll probably be rounded on for being irresponsible, but I was so freaked out by the whole thing, it made me think twice about going for smears again.

Better to be scared than dead.

I'm glad you don't have to wait too long, Twiglett. I had to wait 5 weeks and it was stressful.

You'll feel REALLY relieved once it's over, b/c it really is the only way to determine what exactly is going on down there.

The nurse practitioner who did mine was awesome! She showed me my cervix - well, she asked if I wanted to see it first. Of course I did! She also showed me the biopsy samples and the diagram of where the abnormalities were.

But the rest was up to pathology.

Hang in there, hon.

Consultant called me on Monday and we've moved my appointment to tomorrow morning

Am quietly in a state of panic inside even though I know its nothing to worry about at all .. DH just keeps saying 'you'll be fine' .. my problem is when I panic I do it physically not mentally as in I get weird body symptoms .. have currently got hives on my knee and a sore chest

... eek .. nerves
