hi i am 21 yrs old and 7 months pregnant, i went to the hospital im booked in at because i had a weird fluidy smelly discharge and they did a spec/swab (i think its called), and it came bak clear. 2 weeks later i went bak because i was spotting and the discharge got worse and they did the same test, as they did it they noticed my cervix and up there was a bit tender so they said theyd try testing the inside cells of my cervix in stead of the outside(dont know what that means either) because they looked inflamed. i went home. 3 days later they rang me and told me i tested positive for chlamydia. they prescribed me the antibiotic erythromycin for 7 days i took the whole lot on time and properly, though 1 week later im still having symptoms, i tried telling my hospital midwives and doctor and they still keep treating me like i got thrush or sumthing even though they know what i have i asked them to retest me and they said they wernt really keen on it. i dont understand???? they did a test anyway but im worried theyll miss it again as they did the first 2 times because they are not testing the right spot. i am so mad because ive had this my whole pregnancy and they never picked up on it and they only did bcus i kept nagging them that something was not right, ive been to all my appointments done all my screens and they never found it. now i think i still have it bcus i still have symptoms and they still wont help me WHAT DO I DO!

Did your DP/ DH took a course of ABs as well? If not, you will keep on reinfecting each other.
Never heard about chlamydia causing blindness in a foetus, but I'm sure someone will come with a better advice.

Kaytee I'm sorry you are going through this, it must be really scary.

I think they might be reluctant to test because disturbing the cervix in late pregnancy is something to be avoided, because of the risk of introducing infection (a different one I suppose!) or causing damage to it which might lead to prem labour etc etc...it's unlikely, just something a lot of people think is best not to mess with it.

glad they are re testing, maybe the erythro didn't work - I think you need to go and see your GP again (maybe see a different one?) and ask what the next line of treatment is for chlamydia, once you have tried erythromycin.
Also they will be able to tell you about possible risks to your baby.

Just be very very direct and very clear when you ask these questions and don't go till you understand the answers. They have a duty to explain this to you.

Good luck - hope baby is fine - and I hope you get some effective treatment soon x

Have a look at this

It says erythromycin only works on 90% of infections, and you should be re tested a few weeks later to make sure you are negative.

maybe they will give you amoxycillin instead, but you do need to get this sorted asap. You're right to be concerned, good luck, hope you get somewhere.

Hi Kaytee. If necessary, book a double appointment at the GP so you don't feel rushed and write everything down so you don't forget any of the points you need to know. They should explain everything properly to you and if you still don't feel happy, ask to make to an appointment with a different GP.

hi everyone thanx so much for the advice so far, i dont have a husband or partner and havent been with anyone since i got pregnant as im doing this on my own so i know that for a fact im not getting reinfected i just have a massive feeling ive still got it. Im finding it so hard to get a gp that is understanding and doesnt think im crazy for some reason?????? they never let me say anything and just talk over the top of me even the doctors at the hospital. They did retest me but they missed it the first time with a urine test when i first got pregnant and missed it 2 times again with cervical swabs, so can they blame me for still being worried that they havent picked up on it again? as im still having symptoms as well, im just terrified for my baby girl and will be so mad at myself if i have her and there is something wrong with her because of this stupid disease and lazy doctors who dont seem to care! i might try a family planning clinic or sumthing... or just keep trying till i find a gp that doesnt make me feel like a complete cry baby.

ps- does anyone know anything about the inside cells of my cervix that this doctor was talking about? thats how she found i had it bcuz she said she checked a diffrent part of my cervix? i didnt know there were 2 parts to a cervix.

I would go and speak to someone at an STI clinic if the GP won't listen and aren't being very helpful. Even if you only want information, they'll be happy to help you and won't make you feel like you're being a cry baby -which you're not .
You're quite right to be concerned especially as there are reasons to be worried prior to the birth and without wanting to worry you, complications can occur if you still have chlamydia, such as premature birth and, with a vaginal birth, the passing of the disease to the baby. These are all things your GP/midwife should be discussing with you and you need a definite answer as to whether you still have it or not. Try first speaking to an STI clinic and depending on what they say, go back to your GP and be assertive - can you take a friend/sister/mum with you for support. You must be really worried but that's totally understandable but try to relax and take things one step at a time until you get the answers you need.

I would certainly go to the GUM clinic. Your hospital sound pretty lax. You shouldn't need an appointment and they are not at all judgy (I used to work in one)
Good luck

Kaytee, your cervix is kind of like a bump on the inside of the vagine...like a little hill, but if you imagine it's a bit like a volcano shape instead with a dip in the middle...maybe that is what they were talking about as the 'inside'. It will be closed up if you are pregnant, and hard to get cells from that part without a bit of a risk of disturbing it. Hope that makes sense.
