I'm stuffed - a nasal tale

It's a constant problem with me. I've tried over the counter tablets, Sudafed, Sinutab, plain old paracetamol and ibufurem, anti-hitamins; Vicks inhalers and creams; Olbas oil drops, tissue paper, bubble bath & inhaler stick; steam and hot drinks, menthol crystals; a sinus wash (ugh!), and inhalers from the doc. Nothing works. I get up in the night and walk about, thinking that if I walk up and down the stairs will change the pressure in my nose and unblock it .

But, at last, after suffering for years, and years ( off and on), after long sleepless nights on the sofa, I have found a miracle cure! It's sudafed decongestant nasal spray. It works within 10 minutes and is a great relief.

Only thing is, I'm only meant to use it for a week. What the heck an I meant to do for the other 51 week?

I have been cheating though.... it says you can use it uo to three tomes a day, and because I can cope during the day, I do use it in at least one nostril, before going to bed. Have done for the last 2 - 3 weeks.

Any other miracle cures you could share with me would be fab

I second Furball - used to often suffer from rhinitis/blocked nose/sinus (always same nostril for some reason) - now I just have one squirt of beconaise at night in that nostril.

Ive been like it forever-had various ENT surgeries as a child and teen, would wake up terrified as it felt like I couldnt breathe.

Gave up all dairy-Problem solved.

sudafed nasal spray causes worsening swelling in the long term - rhinitis medicamentosa - that's why it should not be used for more than a week

a few months on from my septoplasty opperation and it is so fantastic. had a cold the other week and it barely bothered me. most days i don't even use one tissue never mind the boxful that i used pre op. the unbearable pain of the op was well worth it.

if you overuse the nasal spray for more than a week you could get a rebound reaction and you symptoms could get even worse. The sudafed spray and otrivine are not supposed to be used for longer than a week and one of the other side effects is an increase in blood pressure and they should not be used during pregnancy

I'm back to update you. Last month I went back to the doctor out of desperation. He prescribed and antihistamine to take once a day and a nasal spray. He said he'd refer me to ENT if they didn't work.

I'm glad to say that I can now breath and smell Grin

He advised me that people with asthma often have nasal problems, but at least I haven't got pollups (sp?)

Downfall of this is now I have a nose which is full of hard snot Blushand [eurgh emotion]

But....now I can sleep ALL NIGHT, which is fab.
