Sex after a coil fitting?

Hi, i had a coil fitted last night, i forgot to ask the nurse how long before it becomes effective! With Valentines day approaching and all i was wondering how long to continue using condoms for, and if condoms are at more risk of breaking with the coil inserted (becuase of the threads) It was a Marena and my last period was 3 weeks ago if that makes any difference. TIA

I used to have one of these, but I can't remember for sure. I'd have thought the coil aspect of it would take effect straight away, though presumably the hormone bit might take longer to kick in.

Did they not give you the leaflet from the Mirena to take away? Does it say?

Maybe ring the doctor and check to be on the safe side...?

Straight away.

Happy Valentines

Effective straight away - knock yourselves out.

i was told it was straight away when researching but when i had mine fitted, nurse told me not for 6wks!?! (was gutted!)

However, mine is a copper coil so maybe different

NOOOOOOOO!
Not straight away, I had one fitted in January and I was told 7 days, and not to use tampons for one month.

Cadelaide · 12/02/2010 11:12

Mine was a mirena too.

Cadelaide · 12/02/2010 11:18

here, under "notes"

BrahmsThirdRacket · 12/02/2010 12:08

Well mine was copper and I did it straight away. They use the copper coil as emergency contraception (if you're too late for the morning after pill) so it must be effective immediately...

It depends on when in your cyle you had it fitted, see here, paragraph 6.

Condoms will be fine.
