my dentist checks for lumps in my mouth/neck/throat/tongue every time I go - some additinoal training he has done and part of the service he says. Has a really good feel around with mouth closed. open, while swallowing etc Do you have a friendly dentist who would have a look for you. Could you pretend its potentially a tooth issue ?

my dentist is a butcher - am considering swaping him for new one - had him since i was a child and he really messed my mouth up last time i went to him for an extraction

hi candy......
sorry you are still feeling like this.

Really bad muscle spasm could make this feel like a lump and could make your neck appear different if muscles have gone out of synch. You say you are frightened of choking...so was i when i had globus hystericus. I was convinced a could see and feel a lump. It gave me panic attacks and i went to the walk in centre in the middle of the night as i was in need of reassurance. it helped for a few hours and then my mind took over again. It eventually went after 3-4 months.

What you have got to tell yourself and i know its not easy,is that you havent choked so far and if it was that bad you would have done by now. My throat also felt sore and it hurt to eat. I had three lots of cameras down my throat before it eventually went away.

I got this with acid reflux from a hiatal hernia. Have you tried taking Zantac and seen if that improves it? One day I couldn't stop swallowing with it.

Omeprazole has really helped.

I have this throat thing - didn't know it was called globus hystericus - but I do know it is stress related. I tend to get it just after I've been very stressed by something, and I've had it on and off for the last 15 or so years. I can feel it coming on for a few days before it really settles, and then it's usually there for two or three months before finally subsiding. Which is incredibly frustrating because I know it is caused by stress, and yet it makes me feel so much more stressed that it is pretty impossible to shift until I've got so used to it I don't think about it anymore.

I worked with an acupuncturist a while ago, and she told me that it is known in that system as Plum stone, and can be treated. I've never quite had the guts to go and be poked by needles, but it might be worth a try if there are no medially observable symptoms.
