My mum needs a liver transplant as she has something called PBC which results in cirrhosis of the liver.
Obviously she is very anxious about it but the doctors are excellent and seem to think on balance it will help her quality and quantity of life.
Has anyone had experience of a family member having a transplant and it being very positive or negative?
Ie do you think the operation is worth the risk for the benefits?
I would really appreciate any comments.
Many thanks.

All transplants carry substantial risks and no transplant is a gurantee for good or even ok health BUT if the doctors feel this is her best chance for a good quality of life then I think she should go for it. Without a transplant her health is only going to detiorate. You will need to be aware of lots of issues surrounding the op and aftercare - particularly with regard to immunosuppression - but this is manageable. Her op will be very carefully planned so that even though it happens suddenly she will get the very best of care. Have you attended any appointments with her? If she is willing it might be a good idea for you to go along and ask your questions too.

Northern lurker wrote it beautifully. She would not be considered for what is a valuable organ if the medics in charge of her care didn't think it would improve her life.

Dear missingfrasier,

Did your mother go for liver transplant in the end? How did it go? Was that a right decision? My mum needs the same as per doctors and i am very anxious? They are suggesting live doner transplant and I am planning to give part of my liver.

Your experience will help me a lot .
