Has anyone had a prophylactic (elective) mastectomy?

With a history of breast cancer in the family and genetic counselling confirming that I'm high risk, I'm starting to think about having a prophylactic mastectomy once I've had my second baby.

Does anyone know anything about this? Is it available on the NHS?

I know that it is quite drastic but want to protect my DC from the childhood experiences I had if at all possible.

I think it would be available on the NHS. Certainly worth asking your GP for a referral if you feel this is for you. A friend of mine had her ovaries removed prophylactically because of family history (she was past menopause).

There was a thread a little while ago where the OP was having this procedure, I'll see if I can find it for you.

here

there are some information sources mentioned which might be of use to you.

If you do go ahead with the op. there are several people on here who have had mastectomies and would be very happy to answer any questions you may have.
