how long to stop bleeding after having a coil fitted?

I had a coil fitted on 11th Jan. i bleed for a bout a week afterwards, not too heavy but enough to need a pad or tampon. I'm still bleeding on an off (think it's stopped then starts again). is this normal?

yes it sounds normal to me, I had bits of spotting for the most part of two months, but then no periods at all after that
I didn't actually mind the spotting stuff because prior to that I had been bleeding so heavily and so often that any improvement on it had to be good.

On and off for a good couple of weeks then my periods took about 9 months to settle down afterwards.

Is it a copper coil or a mirena?

choufleur · 30/01/2010 19:27

copper one. i had a mirena about 18 months ago but fell pregnant with it in so had to have it removed. I can't remember is i bleed a lot with the mirena.

for a copper, it took a year to settle down

oh great

Much more normal to have this type of spotting with a Mirena than a copper coil to be honest
With my copper coil I think I had some bleeding around fitting and then just period bleeding
I would hope that this bleeding would stop fairly soon and then you will get more normal cycles

I also had a copper coil inserted on the 11th Jan and I'm still spotting. Exactly the same as you, just when I think that the spotting has stopped I start again. Last thing at night I get twinges as well.

Had a copper coil fitted on the 7th. Bled for a week to 10 days. Stopped but am spotting again and have been for about 4 or 5 days. Lots of clear discharge and streaked with blood. Odd twinge and cramp too.

Leaflet says to expect spotting between periods for the first couple of months and a search on here said it could go on a while too.

Also seems to stop and then start again. Seems normal then. Was panicking about it but started a similar thread the other day and people said the same thing.

I'd ask to have it checked..
I had the same experience with a copper coil- bleeding for a couple of weeks, then a period, then more bleeding. When I went to the FPA they took one look and said it was half out- it probably wouldn't have worked too well either! I had it removed.
