I'm on antibiotics and have the dreaded thrush. I have a dose of Canesten oral and what I want to know is, if I take it today, will the thrush be gone by Sunday as I am having sex then

Your symptoms should of eased in a few days, but you may still be sore.

Make sure you use the topical canesten and a condom.

muggglewump · 29/01/2010 12:19

Oh, I was hoping you wouldn't say that, I hate condoms.
I don't have the cream either, I'm not sore, I just know I have it, I always do when I take antibiotics.
I just asked for the oral treatment as it's the best and least messy way to treat it.
(shame there will be no oral this Sunday!)

If you are on a course of antibiotics, won't it come back?

muggglewump · 29/01/2010 12:46

I've finished them.
I get thrush every time I take them, but I've never been in quite this situation before.
My bf lives in Aberdeen (I'm 3 hours away), and I've not seen him since the beginning of December and we didn't have sex then as we were sharing a hotel room with DD and he had a heart attack in October, so we haven't had sex since September!
To say I'm gagging for it would be a huge understatement

In the longer term, cutting out bread might help. Something about the yeast/ white flour can cause thrush in a lot of women, and it might help cutting it out if you have to have more antibiotics.

(Sorry, can't help with this weekend!)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/01/2010 13:08

I am astounded at that tale. Poor chap (and you) no wonder you are a tiny bit frisky.

muggglewump · 29/01/2010 13:22

Exactly, and this weekend of all I get fecking thrush.

Oh well, I guess condoms and no oral it is.

If you always get thrush when you're taking antibiotics, then you should get yourself some good probiotics. The antibiotics kill all bacteria in your gut - including the good ones. The result being you create an imbalance, and candida albicans (that causes thrush) can grow unchecked.

Go to a good health food shop and buy some acidophillus - if it is a good shop they will be kept in the fridge, as they contain live bacteria.

If you haven't already, go to Boots/Tesco and buy a Diflucan tablet (or Tesco's own version). You only need one tablet and it's supposed to work within 24 hours, so you should be alright by Sunday!

I would also get a Canestan pessary and cream, to make sure you're really blitzing it.

muggglewump · 29/01/2010 16:17

I have the canesten oral one, is that the same as Diflucan?
I can get all of the other treatments tomorrow if needs be if that will clear it
I get it free on the minor ailments scheme.

No Health food shop here, but I can get yakult or activia, though I do think activia is shite, and just something to give bad ex soap stars a promotions job.

Any advice that will mean I can have sex with no condom and get my fanjo licked have oral at the weekend, will win you a prize!*

I am on antibiotics a lot, and get thrush every time. sometimes really quite badly, and always suddenly.

I always use the canestan pessary and cream combi - use the pessary overnight - good wash out in the morning, and the symptoms have always gone - although i will use the topical cream for a couple of days after as an when i remember! you can get the combi pack off the shelves at tesco!

BecauseImWorthIt · 29/01/2010 17:23

No - don't get yakult/activia - they haven't got enough probiotic in them and they're full of sugar, which will make your problem worse!

Don't know about the canestan oral - what's the active ingredient? Diflucan is fluconazole.

muggglewump · 29/01/2010 17:31

Yes, it's that-150mg.

I prefer the pessary - the oral tablets never seem to work on me. However, it takes 3 or 4 days for all of the chalky residue to come out, so I guess it's worth your trying the tablet!!!

mummytowillow · 29/01/2010 21:12

Get the Diflucan down you, they work really fast, should hopefully be gone by Sunday

This post made me laugh out loud, especially as I'm sooooo jealous as I'm not getting any!!

muggglewump · 29/01/2010 21:23

I haven't been getting any Mummytowillow, which is why I'm so desperate to get rid of the thrush (not that I'd want to have it anyway)so I can have me lots of sex
