To vaccinate or not, that is the question...

The school is vaccinating tomorrow (thurs) and I am still undecided as to consent for my DD1 (7yrs) to have it. She is in good health and eats well. In fact, this is the first school year (since September) that she has not had anything! However, last year she had a mild pneumonia which she recovered well from.

I also have two other children DS1 8yrs and DD2 4yrs. Both of these are in good health. DS1 had a chest infection in November with an acute asthma attack (never had before or since).

On one hand I don't fear they will get it and be really ill or worse. On the other hand, I worry that 20 years down the line it will turn out it had nasty side-effects (eg thallidamide springs to mind).

Help!

my 2yr old dd had the sf on friday in her thigh as she was so danity, told that she might be a bit of colour. by saturday her thigh was swollen and painful but come monday she couldn't walk and didn't want to be touched just lay on the sofa in one position saying help me!all day. took her to doctors just said to dose her up with capol and nurofen.she's still in pain managing to hobble around but now she's got the high temp, runny nose, tummy pains, diahorrea, headache and generally horrid!
we were completely for the jab, but seeing what a bad reaction that she's had to it i'm not sure we'd have done it!
i don't want to scare anyone with this but i think you should know there are these did effects!

poltesco · 03/02/2010 14:36

just to add my 13 & 15yr dss's also had the sf a few weeks back slightly sore arm but were perfectly ok, so not everyone is suffering bad side effects!

MegBusset · 03/02/2010 14:44

DC had theirs last week. No obvious after effects, DS1 didn't even cry.

I did some research and both my ds (2) and dd (4) had it 2wks ago. The way I figured it, the few children that I know who have had SF were very very ill, and I really find it hard to handle my children being ill, never mind in hospital, as it distresses me so much. From what I could gather the vaccine is basically a variant of the usual flu vaccine, which has been around for years and has had few reported problems.

Neither of mine have had any side effects at all- in fact, I was surprised how little it affected them, in comparison to other vaccines they have had.

Fil who is a consultant in infection control, told us to get dd vacinated she had no side effects at all bar a sore arm.

My 2.5 year old had it a week ago - no ill effects whatsoever. A little crying when he actually got the jag but easily stopped by a choc treat!

GruffaloSoldier · 06/02/2010 10:57

My DS nearly 10 months had his 8-12month check yesterday and Health visitor informed us of a death of a 12 month old last weekend in our town of SF so now Im thinking I should. It is such a difficult decision to make though.

Vaccination is an ugly and brutal money-making racket. It has nothing to do with science or disease prevention.
