dd has pneumonia! Advice, please

dd has been ill since Thursday. She's been to the ped twice since then & is now at the hospital with dh for another xray. He's just rung to say she has pneumonia! my poor little chickie! she's so little & skinny... just 5 yrs old. i'm frantic with worry & home with sleeping ds, otherwise i'd be with her.

please tell me what's best for her, apart from the antibiotics they're going to give her. she's asthmatic, btw, which doesn't help. what can we expect?

My dd had it when she was 22mths and tbh the best the thing that helped her recover most apart from the antibiotics was sleep and lots of it.

The extra effort that they have to put in to breath makes them very tired and so as much sleep as poss is great.
Other than antibiotics dd was on quite a bit of oxygen at first but this will depend on how your dd is coping.

I hope your dd isn't too poorly and recovers quickly.

poor dd! she loves to run around. going to bed is a punishment in her little mind. perhaps this will help her to feel more comfortable in her own (new, we've just moved) little bedroom.

Ahhh well perhaps she can sleep on the sofa in the day time. One the antibiotics start to work she will start to feel better, although she may be weak for a while, dd was.

Fingers crossed that she recovers quickly

if i could figure out how to get a picture small enough, i'd post one of her. she's such a cutie. worried, worried... as she says, I know, mama, it's hard to be a mama. sniff.

Ds1 had this too a couple of years ago. Once he got the right anti-biotics (whole 'nother thread), he recovered pretty quickly after being so very ill. Also easily tired for a good while after, but he'd lost a lot of weight with it and needed to totally re-fuel I guess. Hope she makes a speedy recovery. Try not to worry too much (impossible, I know).

since they've all gone to bed (sensibly), i've been looking at medical websites & it seems that there are many different types of pneumonia. I haven't a clue which one dd has. i wish i'd gone ot the hosp with dd instead of dh! Then i could have found out. dh annoyingly offhand on what was said. grrrrrr!

My DS has pnemonia last year when he was 2, not long after we moved I think.
He was ill for about 2 weeks, with a temperature. The Dr told me to just give him calpol to control the temp but another Dr sent us straight to the hospital. A chest x-ray confirmed pnemonia. as one of his lungs was completely full. He lost quite a bit of weight and had dark rings around his eyes. He did fully recover after a week on antibiotics.

Glad your DD is home, its the best place for them once they have the medicine. For your own peace of mind, I would take her back to the Drs once the medicine is finished so they can check her lungs are clear.

If they've allowed her home, it's obviously treatable at home and therefore not too serious. (I don't say that lightly though, but just the word pnuemonia is enough to strike fear into any parent's heart). I'm sure in a few days when the drugs have kicked in you'll see a marked improvement. I did exactly the same as you and looked it up and was as confused, but the pead at the hospital didn't volunteer that there were many types, and I didn't know to ask, so you may not have found out more than your dh, unless the docs were forthcoming with the information iyswim. Try not to be too hard on him.

I agree that I also didn't know there were that many diff types and so I wouldn't really worry about that. So long as the ab's do there job it will be fine , and as Aero said they didn't keep her in at all which is a very good sign.

Dd was in for a week and needed quite alot of help with breathing.
