Sick note dilema!

wurrymurry · 09/01/2010 22:59

I worry a lot!

I had an operation on Monday, Consultant told me I would need 3 weeks off work. (he wrote to Drs surgery advising etc...). I couldn't see my normal Dr after my operation, so saw a different Dr (thinking that everthing would have been documented).

This Dr said that he would sign me off for 2 weeks!

I am now very worried as I was expecting 3 weeks off, have told my place of work that it would be 3 weeks (they have got a replacement for me etc)

What do I do??? I am worried

a) about infection!

b) what will work think of me if I hand a sick note in for 2 weeks rather than 3 weeks!

Don't worry. Take the one for 2 weeks off into work, if you feel like you need some more time pop back to the GP and get another one.

onadietcokebreak · 09/01/2010 23:02

You normally self cert for first 7 days so with docs 2 week cert this would equal 3 wks

wurrymurry · 09/01/2010 23:04

I have worried myself silly this week over this big time!

Is it really that simple!

Yes! Maybe put a call into surgery and ask doctor to clarify for you. Good luck with op

FluffyForLifeNotJustForXmas · 09/01/2010 23:05

yes. It will be OK. Are you worried about the operation?

wurrymurry · 09/01/2010 23:08

Not now! LOL, I have had it done!

Its just I was expecting a 3wk sick note, this Dr only wrote 2 weeks, and now I feel very awkward at giving it in as I had told my bosses it was going to be 3 wks!

Really, don't stress over it. If you need more time then go back to the GP and get another one. Take some time to recover.

onadietcokebreak · 09/01/2010 23:14

When did the doc sign you off from? what was date of Op? any period in between you self cert. If you dont feel well enough at the end of doc cert you just go back and say you still need time to recover

andirobobo · 09/01/2010 23:20

I think hsopital docs can only sign you off for 2 weeks and then you need to see your GP to get the remainder of any sick you need.

I had two ops last year and was off 3 weeks both times, and had to get note off GP for 3rd week - could have got more if I wanted!

wurrymurry · 09/01/2010 23:20

The Dr signed me off from Tuesday, day after operation. Ok will see how it goes, at the moment really not feeling great and seeing the consultant on Wednesday for a follow up, so if needs be could ask him!

How I hate being off sick!

Hospital consultant didn't actually sign me off, he advised Dr, I just thought that GP/Dr would do as he had asked!

The hospital consultant should have done it as he was the one issuing the advice.

Hi I had a hernia op last year and at the hospital was told i needed 3 months off but the longest sicknote the hospital could gve was for 2 weeks and I was advised to visit my GP and get another

hth

difficultdecision · 10/01/2010 15:10

whichwitchisthis - its so frustrating but its actully not true - I think the hospital doctors actually do believe this but it is complete rubbish and the hospital trusts have been told repeatedly since 2001.

i think part of the problem is that the hospitals never bother to stock med 3s (the white certificate) and only ever seem to bother having med 10s (the yellow one that is used to say how long you were in hospital for).

brettgirl2 · 10/01/2010 16:06

Work won't think badly of you for only having a 2 week sicknote, well as long as you don't go back with a suntan.

Relax, recover and forget about them.

Interesting links difficultdecision.

You sound like you have had personal experience!

wurrymurry · 11/01/2010 11:19

Thanks!

Dilema now sorted, had to take eldest DD this morning to my normal Drs, plucked up courage and told him my worries. He looked on system, found the letter that the Consultant had sent. Told me to rip other sick note up and re issued me with a 3 week one!
