Anyone know of possible side effects? Went to my GP complaining of possible PMT and as I wanted to start taking some form of contraception she prescribed cerazette as she felt if may help to alleviate the PMT.Anyone else found this to be true? I bloody hope it works! Only seemed to have developed PMT over the last 3/4 months. I'm 40, have had 3 kids and always been a really positive person so I'm finding my new Scary Cow monthly persona most shocking!! As does DH I hasten to add.
Also thought about taking something complimentary e.g. Agnus Castus or Magnesium???

I have been on cerazette in the past and although all other pills gave me various hideous side effects, Cerazette didn't give me any at all and I didn't have any mood dips or swings on it either
Not got experience with adding magnesium or agnus castus to the mix though (not even heard of agnus castus tbh!)

Stephief · 03/01/2010 21:59

Lol the only surprise I got whilst taking cerazette was a baby!

Other than that obvious issue, I didnt experience any nasty side effects-my periods stopped entirely within two months and with those went to moody cow-ness too!

CDMforever · 03/01/2010 22:03

Stephie, you mean you got pregnant whilst taking it??!! Please God no, we've got 3 and I find 3 hard enough to cope with!! Also, do you mean cerazette GAVE you mood swings?? This isn't looking good is it?!

I didn't get pregnant while taking it and dh and I pretty regular IWKWIM
took it for 2 years
hope you get some more posts to get more of an idea of how it suits people on average!

Nyx · 03/01/2010 22:07

I'm also on cerazette, have been for over 2 years now and I don't think I have any side-effects. I was worried there would be, but so far I think I'm in the clear! Good luck

CDMforever · 03/01/2010 22:16

Thanx Nyx, I really need to feel positive about taking this pill. I've been a complete cow recently just before my period. I shouted at a complete stranger and let out a sort of primal scream whenI was with my DC, poor things. I hate being like this and lots of people have commented in the past on my sunny outlook. I do sometimes think its just a by product of having 2 under 3 at home and feeling a bit trapped but then surely I would feel like this all the time if it wasn't related to my menstrual cycle??

I think you're right, it probably is a pmt thing. I mean, I can be a right grumpy caaaa but that's more of an all-the-time thing

ThatVikRinA22 · 03/01/2010 22:25

i took it for 3 1/2 year - but during this time periods completely stopped. my GP referred to a gynae who stopped it - she said you must have at least 4 periods per year to clear the lining of your womb as a build up is a precursor to cancer. so im off it now. other than that i had no other side effects.

piratecat · 03/01/2010 22:29

i took it for 2 yrs, it was great, no periods, bloody marvelous. I have spd ( 8 yrs on) and it helped with the hormones that used to cause my pelvic pain and hip probs, esp coming up to a period.

I came off it, becuase i wanted to be free of drugs, plus i.am single.

I've never heard of it being bad not to have a period.

Some people don't get on with it though, becuase they have irregular periods and breakthru bleeds.

yes, sazzles, those people on the injection have no choice do they, as when it's in their system it's in.

ThatVikRinA22 · 03/01/2010 23:59

dunno sazzles - it was news to me aswell but 2 different gynaes told me the same thing aswell as my GP so im assuming what they say is true!

i always thought no periods was a bonus but apparently you should have 4 per year to keep your womb healthy.

i came off it but was happy to. am gonaa go a googling....

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/01/2010 00:07

cant find anything but i was at the gynae on christmas eve.

i think maybe medical opinion has changed from a few years ago?

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/01/2010 00:10

oh, and its taken this long for my periods to return to anything remotely like a regular-ish cycle.

i came off it in Feb last year. tbh i dont think id go back on it all things considered.

BertieBotts · 04/01/2010 00:26

I had it and I ended up having a constant period for about a month. Went back to FPC and they shrugged me off with a "just see if it settles down" so I went to my GP and she was alarmed and told me to come off it immediately before I became anaemic.

They were trying me on that to see whether the implant would suit me. It's a good job I tried it first though!

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/01/2010 00:29

yep....found something. this is what my gynae was talking about -

look at possible complications

endometrial hyperplasia.

Seona1973 · 04/01/2010 09:25

But are they not saying that the endometrial hyperplasia is causing the lack of periods rather than the other way round, whereas it is the pill that is causing the periods to stop?

from the link:

Depending on the cause, amenorrhea may be harmless, or it may be associated with overgrowth of the uterine lining, a condition called endometrial hyperplasia. This can sometimes lead to uterine cancer.

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/01/2010 15:07

yeah but how do you know the cause if your on a pill that stops your periods anyway?

id not had periods for 5 years, im just telling you what my gynae told me....for me personally cerazette seems to have completely knackered up my cycle, they cant find any other cause.

ThatVikRinA22 · 04/01/2010 15:09

(i was on a combined pill previously to that and had no periods on that one either)

probably just me with a wobbly system but i think gynaes prefer you to have at least 4 periods per year

bethyrose · 05/01/2010 09:35

I started taking Cerazette last week, and since then have been feeling 'abnormal'......definately being a scary cow too! My husband even commented last night on how I had become more stressed and unhappy. I found this thread on other peoples negative experiences. here

xkaylax · 10/01/2010 10:33

Pineapplechunks · 10/01/2010 10:47

OP, I was on cerazette for a few years and found it absolutely fine. The only side effect I did have was to develop a cervical erosion but that isn't particular to cerazette that can happen with any contraceptive pill.

A year ago I came off cerazette and had a coil fitted and have noticed worsening mood swings so it seems that cerazette really helped with my PMT because I never noticed it when I was on it.

brettgirl2 · 10/01/2010 16:17

I have awful pmt but didn't have mood swings on cerazette. I did have one long period though, which was a bit of a nuisance. At the end of the day you need to see how it suits you, everyone's different.

CDMforever · 10/01/2010 16:53

Brettgirl2, thanks for that positive messsage. I've only been on it for 2 weeks so yet to see how I am around PMT time - hopefully less of a psycho mum!
