have been given omeprazole 40mg for gastritis and have been on it 2 weeks. For the last 3-4 days i have had bi-lateral pain in both calf muscles, which really hurts when i crouch down. Has anyone else had leg pains whilst they have been on it

My 13 mth old DS has been on it most his life, no side effects that I know of.

callmeovercautious · 22/12/2009 16:41

Have you been walking in the snow or on ice?

I have sore ankles which I know is from walking in an unusual way in the snow.

I have taken this and never had anything but good effects.

TheWorldFamousKewcumber · 22/12/2009 17:03

I have been on 40 mg and am now on 20mg - no side effects for me either

brettgirl2 · 22/12/2009 17:16

When I first started taking it I got headaches. If I forget I've taken it and take another I get headaches too. No probs with muscles in legs though.

moocowme · 22/12/2009 21:06

your stomach can't absorb all the vitamins and minerals due to less accide. the cramps are from less magnesium. a suplement usually sorts this out.

this was the only side affect i have from losec. otherwise it is brilliant. made very heavy periods much lighter as well. wich is a blessing really

alypaly · 23/12/2009 00:29

moocow, its just pain, its not really cramp.its right a the top of my calf muscle, just below the back of the knee,in the widest part of the calf. my right one hurts a bit more than my left. I was wondering about DVT's

just had a look at omeprazole patient info leaflet and it say muscle pain is a rare side effect.

in on 60mg daily - never had a single side effect with it.

id ask your gp tbh if your at all concerned.

CaptainDarcyCasuabonHenchard · 23/12/2009 00:55

DP been on it for a year, and no side effects. BUT I wholeheartedly endorse suggestions that you talk to your GP if you are at all worried.

If you don't want to do that/don't find it easy to talk to GP - ask your pharmacist. She/he is trained to address this kind of concern!

Good luck; sleep well.

tw1nkley · 23/12/2009 00:58

I was on this ages ago, and I didn't get the side effect you are describing, however even tho I took it as per the instructions I would regularly vomit back my lunch and it would be perfect, not even slightly digested I had no stomach acid!

Consequently I couldn't take it and then I found out omeprazole was contraindicated with the pill.

The problems I was having with my stomach finally cleared up hen I lost 2 stone, it was such a relief.

Really hope you're feeling better soon.

alypaly · 23/12/2009 01:30

captaindarcy..im a pharmacy dispenser so i can get the info,i was just more interested if anyone had had these more rare side effects.

OP posts:
ChristmasMoon · 23/12/2009 15:28

I take it quite regularly and have never had those side effects. Are you sure you haven't been cycling in your sleep??

Talk to your GP, we all react differently to drugs.

alypaly · 23/12/2009 17:41

maybe after my comments on another post...im having an imaginary all night binge on nookie with the invisible man

I take it and I had hot tingling feelings in my calf when I first went on it which eased off. Now I get it in my foot occasionally. When I've upped the dose, I've also felt quite nauseous but it eases off. It does have side effects but they're quite mild for me.

alypaly · 23/12/2009 17:49

thx carmen.. i might stay off it for a while or reduce the dosage...and see if legs stop aching so much. Doc said i needed to be on it for approx 2 months after this gastritis but the leg pain is really going to affect my badminton

Alypaly, sorry, I didn't know you are a pharmacy dispenser. I meant no offence! And hope you get the problem sorted.

CrossWhy · 23/12/2009 22:35

Alypaly as a dispenser you should know not to mess about with medication without talking to your doctor first. You cannot just suddenly stop omeprazole unless you want to be drinking gaviscon all day never mind the fact you are increasing the chance of a repeat round of gastritis.

CarmenTinselPalmTreesSanDiego · 23/12/2009 22:57

My doctors were pretty much ok about me experimenting with the dose to see what worked. Omeprazole treats symptoms rather than underlying causes.

It's a weird drug. I tried to dial it down by half a tablet for a couple of weeks but I had loads of breakthrough heartburn. It's hard to get an accurate dose of that stuff and I think a fair amount of it is trial and error.

alypaly · 24/12/2009 01:14

hi crosswhy,i do know not to suddenly stop medications ,but if the side effects are now out weighing the benefits, its making me think otherwise. I have only been on them 2 weeks anyway and my symptoms are virtually better. Doc only wanted me to be on them short term too. Couldnt get through to GP to ask about the leg pain so i have tipped half the contents out of the 40 mg capsule so that i can put myself on a reducing dosage until i can get an appt. I have got gastrocote in so if my tummy feels rough i can chew those.

The leaflet says leg pain is a serious side effect but i dont know why and i cant find the info from anywhere.

My gastritis was due to food poisoning so im hoping it is just a temporary thing,(despite being really painful at the start). Im hoping that once my guts have settled which they have almost( just getting a bit of loose bowels with rich things)...the gastritis wont return. Have only ever had it once before and the docs werent sure if it was gastritis or pancreatitis.

OP posts:
brettgirl2 · 24/12/2009 10:53

There isn't much point in taking the contents out because if you do that it is killed by stomach acid. That's why it's safe for bfing apparently.

I don't think it's true that it's contraindicated with the pill either, I've taken the pill while on it.

Can't you just phone the doctors and ask for rinitidine instead?

alypaly · 24/12/2009 11:56

no i meant opening the capsule up and taking half out and then putting it back together. The capsule is in two halves and can be seperated to take half out. It doesnt stop its efficacy as long as the cpasule is put back together. In fact with some children they have to take it as granules. As long as they are not chewed it is fine.

OP posts:
brettgirl2 · 24/12/2009 20:19

Ok, yes that would prob work then.

StrawberryBeret · 24/12/2009 21:53

If you look at the list of side effects in most prescription medications the list covers malfunctions in just about every conceiveable part of the body so what you're experiencing could be down to the drug I suppose on the basis that the drug companies have covered pretty much everything with that leaflet!

I take Omeprazole most days and have for several years and I've never noticed any adverse side effects. I couldn't live without it!
