Anyone take statins

sincitylover · 22/12/2009 15:41

My gp wants me to take statins - my cholestrol is 5.1 which apparently ordinarily is OK but have just been diag with type 2 diabetes so if you have that they like it below 4.

However just googled the side effects of statins and feel really unsure about taking them.

Just wondered about others experiences.

I don't but my parents do.
Have you tried diet and exercise first?

side efects are random- muscle pain and weakness the worst.

If I were you- depending on your gae- I'd try lifestyle measures first.

they can cause tendon ruptur too and if you have to go on certain antibiotics ,you have to stop taking them for the course of the Abx

How about turning this on its head - have you thought about the consequences of not taking a Statin? Has your GP explained to you why you need to take them?
Essentially diabetes will predispose you to having higher levels of the LDL (Low density lipids) which are the ones which build up inside the arteries causing heart disease and peripheral vascular disease. Diet and exercise can lower your cholesterol level by about 10%, but may not have a huge effect in you LDL.
Yes, statins have side effects, but they tend to occur when given at higher doses. There are a wide range of statins availabe, so it can sometimes just be a case of finding the one that suits you best.

I am a diabetic , type 1, am supposed to be on a statin.
watching with interest.
My consultant has written to gp. I must get my arse into gear and go and see my GP.
My mum who is on a statin says that many cause leg spasms, and normally the cheaper ones, but that I must just insist on being a given another one, until I find one that suits.

I've been on a statin for about 18 months now due to high cholesterol. My cholesterol was quite high and couldn't be helped by diet as I am already a non dairy eating vegetarian { basically a vegan who eats eggs }. In fact, before using statins I tried cutting out eggs and using dairy free Benecol for a couple of months and my cholesterol went even higher.

I did a bit of research before starting them and read that if you take them with CoEnzyme Q10 it can alleviate some of the side effects, so I do that.

Have to say I have never had any problems at all { and I usually get every side effect going }. You will probably also have no problems with them - most people don't according to my Gp.

I?ve been taking a statin for 18 years and the only side effect is the occasional muscle pain ? when this occurs I take a CoQ10 supplement for a week or so and it clears up.

Some people do react badly to a statin, it is true, but the majority don?t. If I was in your position I would try it and see how you get on ? you might not have any problems at all.

All of my mum's finger tips split and bled when she was on Statins, she took them for three years. Gave them up and within six months her finger ends are perfect again. Please see naturalnews.com and search statins.

Naturalnews? Hmmm just had a look and apparently they know how to cure cancer and halt diabetes in 25 days - someone ring the department of health, we could save ourselves billions!!!

Exactly, its big bucks! Glad you saw the light. Get Well Soon- Remove the cause the effect will astound you by United Authors is a wake up call and Fifty Years of Folly and Fraud by Irwin Bross is another.
