Had a sore throat for 4 months now. How to shift it...its getting me down

I have had this on and off (mostly on) sore throat for ages now. It kicks off when I am tired/low/have another lurgy etc and then slowly peters out. It is worse at night, swells and gets really sore, enough to wake me up and keep me awake, but just looks a bit red during the day so not much to show the doc (who just said 'Its a virus')

I had a minor-ish op last Monday and took a few days to get over the general anaesthetic...sore throat has jumped at the opportunity and is giving me real grief now.

How do I shift this persistent bug...? Im already on anti-biotics since I also have an infection from my OP (sigh )

i am not too worried about the RA now that you have explained those symptoms. The reason it doesnt hurt as much or at all during the day is because you are not mouth breathing. The phlegm is thinner because the air is not drying it out and hence you dont get a sore throat til night time. Do you snore just a little bit.

A beconase nasal spray may help to alleviate the symptoms. I f the phlegm is not too discoloured it might be worth a try to settle the inflamation in your nasal passges down.

Its still worth the blood tests ....ESR,CRP and RF for the sore joints ,just to rule out a possible cause. As you say, it might be because of your hypermobility.

How sore are your joints...is it knuckles or the smaller joints

AvrilH · 22/12/2009 12:37

I never used to snore - and if I've been doing so lately, DH has somehow resisted telling me

we have beconase so I'll give it a go

it is all the finger joints - they are not that sore really, but swollen and stiff making it difficult to type, a bit itchy too..

Thank you so much, I've never had such success with NHS direct

I vote for acid reflux. I have this and sometimes get sore throats instead of heartburn.

alypaly · 22/12/2009 15:55

do they feel like little sausages at times and a bit warm and tight

AvrilH · 29/12/2009 23:28

sorry it's taken me so long to reply - been away for Christmas without internet access

yes, they do sometimes feel a bit like that, and itchy too

thankfully all these symptoms have vanished over the past few days

hope Iblame's throat has cleared too

good evening..i have really a serious problem. serious in way that it interferes my daily activities.. I have sore throat for more than 4 months.I already went to ENT and undergoing a examination through a camera and diagnosed to have an inflamed throat..im worried coz until now,the pain is still there..i have difficulty in breathing, ear pain and spitting pleghm all throughout the day..Im now putting in the situation of being afraid coz of financial probs..

Annietheacrobat · 13/09/2014 16:08

I would request an ENT review with those symptoms.

You might ask your GP to check your thyroid. Itchy ears and a persistent low level sore throat can be symptoms of an underactive thyroid, as can low immunity.
