I got news this morning that one of my friends died yesterday. She was in her very early 30's, two young children and everything to live for. Despite a mastectomy a couple of years ago, the cancer spread and she is gone. I can't tell you how dreadful I feel.

It is so important that we check our breasts regularly. It takes a few minutes and could save your life.
One of my best friends had a message just like this one, but it was face to face and by her boyfriends exgf who also had just had a mastectomy because of breast cancer. This message from such an unlikely messenger almost certainly saved my best friends life.

Pass the message on please ladies. Make sure your friends and family are nudged into remembering to check.

Good! My friend just finished RT and goes back to work on Tuesday...

MaryAnnSingleton · 25/01/2010 09:09

that's good - hope she is recovering from the radio.

She is...she's very glad to be alive! and I've told her to wear her 'victory scars' with pride

We were shown how to do it at sixth form and it was really useful. We had to find lumps in an artificial breast - a nurse came in and showed us how. Maybe MNers who have kids of that age might ask at their school to see if this is included in their curriculum.

bumpity bumpity bumpity bump!

Thanks ladies for the advice, will get checked as soon as I figure out where the nearest wellwomen clinic is.

A friend of mine puts a note in her diary to remind her to push the button on her smoke detectors, maybe we should stick a note in our diaries to check our boobs, and to get them professionally checked once a year?

Hell, we do it for our teeth!

Thanks again,

Hi MAS and thank you.

The day went really well with many, many mourners standing both down the sides and in the centre aisle too.
My friends and I just couldn't get our heads around the fact that our very young and vibrant, forever smiling friend was lying in the coffin in front of us; she was 32, far too young to be in there .
Her children did not attend and that has to be a personal family choice really I suppose. It's heartbreaking to think that they will never really know their lovely and loving Mummy. She really doted on those girls...
I keep on thinking that that could actually be any one of us and that makes this thread even more important to keep bumping along.

SO, ladies, please keep checking those breasts regularly. Stay as healthy as you can for those beautiful children you have and pass the message to all your female friends and family.

MaryAnnSingleton · 06/02/2010 08:46

well done for getting through it - that is so young and it's so sad for the children-am sure they will be supported and helped through this time and in the future-and all her friends will be sure that she isn't forgotten. Have you read Before I Say Goodbye -by Justine Picardie about her sister Ruth's breast cancer and death-think she was 34- a very good book.

solo · 07/02/2010 01:07

No, I haven't. Not sure I want to tbh. I've had and got so many close people going through cancer and lost or still fighting it, I don't think I can face it really. Maybe when I'm more settled in my grief(still not grieved my Dad or MIL who both had cancer). Thanks though, I'll certainly remember it if I change my mind.

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2010 08:37

yes, probably not good to read when still dealing with things so personally, but a very good book.
