4yr old DS hand spasms when excited

Have wondered about posting this for a while. My DS is 4 and a half. When he is excited eg during his favourite TV programme, when he saw our Christmas tree, when he thinks about things he is looking forward to etc he does an invluntary spasm with his fingers and fists, twists them round and his arms go rigid for a moment. He is a very confident, sociable little boy and I would say he is very normal in every way but I had always thought he would have grown out of it by now. Has anyone else had experience of this? Should I be worried?

My son - 5 next week always flaps his hands when he is excited or is thinking about something that excites him. He also waggles his head side to side and will sometimes jump up and down on the spot. He has done this since he was about 8 months old. It was picked up by speech therapists as apparantly it is a sign of autism (he is def not autistic) and also his school asked us about it when he started in September. I am quite chilled with it and will probably adress it when he gets a bit older when his peers might start noticing (in Year 2 for e.g.).

hi - thanks. Good to know he's not the only one. Ds is def not autistic am sure of it. No head waggling here but otherwise similar. I'm chilled too but was beginning to wonder if other kids noticed it & whether I should be worrying.

my friend's child does a similar thing and they have seen the hosp paed re it but no worries or anything

worth getting it checked out if you have concerns

My lovely, now nearly 8 yr old, neice did this when she was 3 or 4. I used to worry a bit about it, but it was just excitement...she stopped doing it a year or two later.

DS1's best friend had this into his early teens....when he used to get hyper excited or want somthing his hands used to go into spasms. His hads use to tilt slighly backwards and his fingers would move involuntarily. He also suffers from dyslexia and whist at my house i used to find that it was more obvious when he was unable to express himself properly,or if he was frustrated at tings.Worth getting checked out though
