Ovarian cysts anyone?

Am 5 and a half weeks pregnant and went for an early scan today in case of possible ectopic pregnancy as keep having pains on left side.

They saw the fetus in the right place in my uterus but said that my left ovary looks 'chunky' with some fluid filled sacs visible. I was told that they cannot rule out the possibility that I may have an ectopic pregnancy as well as a normal one in utero or it could be a multiple pregnancy or cysts.

I am confused because I always thought ectopic pregs formed in the fallopian tubes not the ovaries?? Also how could a twin still be in the ovary when the other embryo is in the uterus??

When they said it could be ovarian cysts, I started to crap myself as they had leaflets about ovarian cancer in the waiting room and I have all the symptons including back pain but that could be pregnancy hormones right?

Am very confused and tired because I spent the best part of 6 hours in the hospital today and was too tired to ask questions, I just wanted out of there!! Anyone know anything about this??

I had an ovarian cyst when I was pregnant - it didn't cause a problem and disappeared before 20 weeks. They are really common I think. Will keep fingers crossed there is no ectopic pg though.

Plus, re-read message if ovarian cancer they wouldn't appear as fluid filled I don't think. I was forced to have an (unneccesary) internal scan at 12 weeks because the sonographer was not happy to accept someone else's word about mine being fluid filled. it had been diagnosed as 'simple' at 6 week scan due to bleeding but she wanted to make sure herself.

Thanks Brettgirl - I'm sure I'm overreacting but the leaflets in the waiting room did not help as all the symptoms are more or less the same as early pregnancy. Will have to keep myself busy till the end of next week and try not to think about it!

It is extremely likely you have cancer- so just stop it now!

First you are too young- it usually occurs 50-55+ and older and they would have been suspicious of the types of cyst as well.

The chances of cancer must be 99.99999999%.

Sorry- typo- unlikely!

I had a very large ovarian cyst with both my pregnancies. The first one was removed when ds was 2 and the second one was removed when dd was 9 months old. Ovarian cysts themselves cause all the same symptoms as ovarian cancer. You might find that the cyst/cysts disappear during pregnancy & they are in fact fairly common in early pregnancy.

Try not to worry, (and definitely, definitely DO NOT GOOGLE like I did!) if it is a cyst, your pregnancy should continue as normal. The main risk is if the cyst twists, but it sounds like the cyst is very small so that would be unlikely. You might be scanned more often, but nothing wrong with that, you get to see your baby more often than most!

Ladies - thank you. Had another scan on Friday and the sonographer said very matter of factly that I do have a cyst but that is probably because I ovulated from that ovary and she would expect it to be there. It will probably disappear later on the pregnancy.

Wish she did the scan the first time round!!
