All of a sudden, after nearly 7 years it is makingy skin sore and flaky. I am Ok with my weddng ring but as soon as I put me engagement ring back on it looks red raw again. Have tried a smear of Vaseline to no effect - dies anyone have any ideas? ( it is platinum with a diamond) thanks

is the metal reacting with a chemical cleaner, soap?

is the wedding ring made of the same
?

Goober · 22/11/2009 19:43

Does it need cleaning?

PerArduaAdNauseum · 22/11/2009 19:44

Have you taken an old toothbrush and given the back of the stone setting a really good clean to get rid of any soap/handcream etc build-up which may have collected there?

daisydotandgertie · 22/11/2009 19:45

My ring does the same thing. Taking it off overnight and making sure it's clean (by soaking it overnight in soapy water every few weeks) has solved my very sore, itchy and flakey rash.

Give it a go.

FleetMummy · 22/11/2009 19:53

GIve it a really good clean

And then coat the inside with clear nail varnish.

That might do the trick.

ShortArseBread · 22/11/2009 20:02

Mine does that if I put my hands in a lot of water with chemicals e.g. strong washing up liquid, or gets soap or cleaning stuff stuck under it. I try to remember to wear gloves because otherwise you can't get rid of it unless you take it off and that upsets dh.

clemette · 22/11/2009 20:55

Thanks everyone. I have cleaned it but will give it a good soak overnight.

Make sure it is properly dry inside the mounting before you put it back on.

LynetteScavo · 22/11/2009 21:54

Maybe it's only platinum plated, and now the platinum has worn off you are reacting to the nickel underneath?

nearlychrimbo · 22/11/2009 22:18

mines the same - i have a full cirle of baguette diamonds - the inside has cut outs and its really irrating me at the mo.

im guessing its always wet so am going to start taking it off

teameric · 22/11/2009 22:26

I have this with my wedding ring, I have cut out bits in the inside too, I take it off when I wash my hands and dry my finger and ring thoroughly after, and I soak my ring in some hotwater and scrub the indide with a soft toothbrush to clean it.
I coat the inside with clear nail varnish too, seems to make it slightly better and not as sore.

Spidermama · 22/11/2009 22:32

I've given up wearing mine. It's not worth getting all scabby and itchy for.

Are you sure it's platinum? White gold can cause allergies as it contains nickel.

clemette · 22/11/2009 23:04

Thanks again.
I chose it at the very reputable jewellers so am pretty sure that is is platinum (see very old thread for how I don't get it when people don't choose their own engagement rings!)
