Why on earth would she advise that rather than a couple of paracetamol?

It's not so much the pain, but the blood loss, reikizen.

Is a period-like loss normal after a smear?

Thanks.

Well, at lower end, seawater has a salinity of about 3.5%. This means that every kilogram (2.2lb), or every litre, of seawater has approximately 35 grams (1.2 oz) of dissolved salts (mostly, but not entirely, the ions of sodium chloride: Na+, Cl−).

Dead sea where people also soak for health benefits is about 10 times more salty (33.7%), so I would say you can easily put in a good cupful in. You can also get proper bath salts.
