Kidney Infections, whats causing them?

I have been unwell all week and managed to get to the GP today who conformed i had a water infection which has spread to my kidney, this is the 2nd time in 4 months, last time i was sent for a scan and x-ray to rule out kidney stones and all was ok.

I used to get this a lot in my teens but the symptoms were different.

I have stomach ache and back pain but no burning when i wee, i feel worse in the mornings, feel sick and slight temp.

What could it be that causing these infections?

I'm starting to worry that there might be something wrong with my kidneys.

Do you know if the urine is actually gowing a bug each time?
Do these infections occur after having sex after a period of abstinence?
If you are getting recurrent infections you need not only to have an x-ray and ultrasound scan but also a check for diabetes and probably some functional assessments of your urinary tract.

Stones are only one cause of recurrent infections.

It is growing a bug each time.

Its not occuring after sex or after my period, the only thing which is the same as last time is that i have had a cold when i get the infection.

I havn't been checked for diabetes so thats a possibility. I drink a lot of water and juice (always feel thirsty).

Maybe i should go and talk to my GP, the doctor i saw yesterday was not my Gp (walk in center).

My DD was getting them aftr being ill with something else. I was told it was because he immune system was low, she'd had 'flu each time befor getting them.

i used to get them alot and ended up with pylonephritis....are these like your symptomswww.patient.co.uk/doctor/Pyelonephritis.htm

alypaly- those symptoms are spot on, one of my kidneys is hurting, i have lower back pain and my temp is up and down.

Did Anti-biotics work for you? I'm on my 2nd day of taking them and i still feel rough and still having pains. Hopefully they will start to work by tomorrow.

which antibiotics are you on. If i remember correctly i think i had a couple of courses of trimetoprim for urine infections and cystitis, then it went to my kidneys and i was really ill for months. Admitted to hospital once with it as i had a really high temp and sever pain. They then cultured the bug and gave me the correct antibitics. But was ill with it for many years on and off as it got into kidneys. Whenever i got run down it seemed to trigger it off again. Thankfully have not had it for over 10 years now.

ABx will take longer than a couple of days.
Have thay sent a specimen off for culture. Is it causing you to pass blood in the urine

Marne · 20/11/2009 14:18

I'm on Trimethoprim, they havn't sent a sample off (maybe because it was not my surgery that i went too?), last time there was blood in my sample but they havn't told me this time, they tested it in another room and then just told me it was an infection. I can't see any blood when i go.

I think i will go and see my GP on monday (give the antibiotics time to work) and get him to test my urine again.

they really should send a sample off before you start on the antibiotics,so that it doesnt cloud the results.

If you have blood in your urine ask to see consultant if this is on going.

Finish this course of ABx but if it hasnt gone or it goes worse whilst you are still on them, insist on a sample and see your normal GP.
An infection shows up with white blood cells in the urine but they still should have sent it off for culture.....bah doctors!!

WobblyPig · 20/11/2009 22:11

Trimethoprim will not treat pyelonephritis and is not the treamtent for infection with general unwellness or temperature.

You need to know if it is the same bug being grown each time or different bug.

Marne · 22/11/2009 09:07

I went back to the walk in center yesterday as i felt really rough, was still in pain and going to the loo every 10 minutes. They tested my urine again, i still have the infection but there was no sign of blood in my sample, they have put me on stronger antibiotics and i have to take a urine sample in to them in 3 days time if i'm not better.

Peeing less this morning, less pain but still feel sick.
