Possible gastroenteritis and backache?

I've been feeling really run down and poorly for a could off weeks but have put it down to the insomnia I've had. Had nausea and stomach ache starting sunday night which I thought was just linked in to tiredness. Went to dr yesterday who gave me some sleeping tablets for the insomnia and said the stomach ache was probably gastroenteritis (DD appeared to have it last week - some sort of vomiting bug anyway).

I haven't been sick but tummy is tending, and now I have bad lower back ache. I've lost my appetite so am still hungry. I forced some chicken a rice down last night but the only other thing I can face is ice cream. I know that probably isn't the best thing for a poorly tummy but it is honestly the only think I can face apart from some very sweet tea.

Does this sound like gastroenteritis? And is it normal to have back ache with it?

The back ache will be from dehydration, something to do with the kidneys I think. I had a terrible sickness bug while on a school trip many years ago and the worst part was the back ache. As horrible as you may feel, try and keep well hydrated.

Bumperlicioso · 17/11/2009 12:28

Thanks, I haven't actually been sick though, so shouldn't be too dehydrated. Honestly if I hadn't taken a test which said otherwise I would swear I was PG as this feels like morning sickness.

Have you had your appendix out? Try googling the symtoms of appendicitis to see if they match what you have. If you think you might have it you need to see a gp asap.

Bumperlicioso · 17/11/2009 12:49

Oooh, thanks for the tip. It does say that appendicitis can often be misdiagnosed as gastroenteritis (god I'm sick of typing that!), but I've no temp, the dr felt my tummy yesterday and it is just a dull ache, not really getting worse, just not really getting better. Will bear it in mind though.

I didn't have a temperature when I had appendicitis. The sympthoms can be very atypical if you appendix is at an unusual angle. If The pain gets worse make sure you see your GP or call your out of hours doctor. I was off colour for about 4 months before it happened then it got critical over about 12 hours, starting ff as what I thought was period pain. I went to bed for the afternoon, when i woke up the pain was starting to be as bad as labour so I went and saw my GP, by midnight that night I'd had my appendix out.

Hello Bumper. I am at home with poorly dd - she has a tummy bug too and keeps being sick. SOrry you are feeling poorly - think there are some nasty bugs going about. Do you think you might be pregnant but perhaps too early to pick it up? Did you tell the doctor you are TTC - are the sleeping tablets ok to take if you are pregnant?

BonjourIvresse · 17/11/2009 12:58

Also, if you have an ectopic pregnancy it sometimes doesn't show up on a pregnancy test.

Bumperlicioso · 17/11/2009 13:32

Thanks for the replies. Dr knows I am TTC. She asked if I felt like I had any symptoms (e.g breast tenderness - the sickness is usually a later symptom, I'm barely at the stage of implantation) so she seemed to think it was ok. However this was the same doctor who said it was ok to not use contraception while bfing (with no caveats). It would be far to early to be eptopic I assume and I had a period 3 weeks ago.

The tablets did help though. She gave me the lowest dose and said to take one to start with. Woke up at 3 and took another one and slept till 9.30, so two tonight I think.

Sorry baby Lcy is poorly, it's awful when they are sick as LOs. DD had it last week, v traumatic. She keeping any breastmilk down? DD was sick every half hour from 12-6am, then spent the next just laying on the sofa whimpering, which is what I feel like doing. Just watching SATC and crocheting.

It is typical really - i have been reducing the breast feeds this past week with the aim of only feeding her before bed. She has been fine with this with a bit of distraction but I have had major engorement (sp?). Now she is poorly she just wants to feed and I am letting her because it is all she can keep down. But now my supply is building up I will have to start over with the weaning. Nevermind! She is asleep at the mo. I am eating raw cookie dough and mumsnetting! Is mini bumper better?

Bumperlicioso · 17/11/2009 13:51

What a pain, it's going to be harder to wean her off for a while. Mini bumper much better but after getting away with everything (dummies and TV - her equivalent of comfort feeding ) she had a few days of tantrums, but a whole day of no TV yesterday. Now DH has taken her to his mums, bless him.

Can't wait for our child free night!

Bumperlicioso · 17/11/2009 14:21

Me neither. The one up side if I'm not sprogged up by then will be drinking copious amounts of red wine!
