School entry hearing screening test

This is kind of a work related question, but also for my own interest. This hearing test is supposedly conducted on all 4-5 year olds in the UK at around the time of school entry. Have any of your children actually had it? I know my 5yo dd has certainly NOT had it or indeed been offered it.

DS1 had it in Y1 recently.

DS1 (nearly 7 in Y2) definitely didn't have it. DS2, who will start school in September, failed his 8 month distraction hearing test twice and was referred; he passed the tympanogram, though one eardrum was a bit flat, and they told me to arrange a hearing test before he started school 'just in case'. They certainly don't seem to do it routinely before school.

I think DS1 had his when he was in Yr1 - he definitely had one, and DS2 who is currently in reception hasn't had one through the school yet.

Thanks for the replies. Anyone else with experience?

my dd had it in reception, my dd due to start reception has not

flatmouse · 17/06/2005 11:42

DS had it in reception - it's nothing much tho - just listening to sounds of different frequency - we had no feedback whatsoever even tho i had mentioned i was concerned. Presumably "no news is good news" on that front. However based on my concerns we had a separate referral test (which we waited 8 months for) - and bizarrely the appointment was for the week of his school hearing test!

We had to sign a permission slip, so I can't imagine that anyones DS/DDs would have had it without them knowing tbh.

zebraZ · 17/06/2005 19:10

My DS is in reception, I'm not aware of him having his hearing tested, either. Am in Norfolk.

titchy · 17/06/2005 20:40

dd had hers done in rreception, along with eye tes and height/weight measured. We had to sign a form giving permission and were recently told by the school nurser that ds, about to enter reception, would, along with all the other reception children, also get the same treatment. We're in Surrey btw.

coppertop · 19/06/2005 11:59

Yes. Ds1 had his hearing tested a few months after starting in Reception. It was part of a general check-up including having eyesight tested and height/weight checked. We were told in advance and signed a permission slip. When the check-up was finished we were given a letter stating whether or not there were problems and what (if anything) needed to be done next.

chatee · 19/06/2005 12:12

same as coppertop

nutcracker · 19/06/2005 13:02

Dd2 (age 5) had hers about 2 mths ago and then had it repeated about a month later (she failed first one).
