Swelling on neck but not underactive thyroid? What could it be?

Have had swelling on both sides of neck for about 6 months! Swelling is a bit bigger on right side. Family kept saying to me to get it looked at as didn't look normal. TBH just thought I had freaky neck. I have had no pain, no threat infections etc. Went to dr. last week got bloods done as she wanted to check for underactive thyroid. Asked if I was tired, putting on weight etc. Thought had put on bit of weight but I put it down to a bit of over indulgence. Get tired on and off but this is normal for me. Blood results back today all normal. She mentioned ultrasound for neck so I assume this is what she might say tomorrow when speak to her. Does anyone have any experience of this. I mean im sure if it was serious I would have symptoms. The only symptoms I have been having is with my stomach and that is bloating and cramps but think have a bit of IBS thought this might have been connected to thyroid but it seems ok. Anyone think what this could be?

yep i had this, all bloods normal but massive lump in thyroid. turned out to be a folicular adenoma. it got the chop as it just kept growing.

Do you have an infection anywhere else? It could be glands fighting an infection somewhere... but tbh i'm sure your dr would know...

you do need to have an ultrasound to see if its one or multiple nodules. this might give clues as to what it is.

in the case of folicular adenoma/carcenoma you want a specialist to advise you as its pretty tricky to diagnose the difference on scan or fine needle biopsy alone.

you need to check it out to make sure its not cancer (thyroid cancer is completely curable if caught early)

I have the same thing although on one side of my neck and it was triggered by first pregnancy. Normal thyroid function but nodules on the thyroid causing enlargement. I'm leaving it for now but want it removed after i've had this baby as don't want it coming back again. If it bothers you then ask for it to be removed.

Hth.

I've had a few thyroid function tests because of a suspected goitre but turns out I've just got a bit of a fat neck

Like you OP, no pain , no other symptoms, maybe a bit of weight gain but probably down to too many cakes than my thyroid and a touch of occasional IBS.

If the Doc says have a scan, have a scan, better to have all tests offered and find out thats it's nothing nasty and you, like me have a bit of a fat neck, than don't test, ignore it and it turns out to be something bad and you missed your chance for easy treatment.

I've got this just now but I pulled some muscles on the same side a few weeks back and thought it was caused by that. I'm on anti-inflamatories just now.
GP mentioned ultrasound (I am hypothyroid and used to have goitre) if swelling doesn't improve following meds.
How did you get on?
