toenail split across the middle?

My toenail has a split horizontally across the middle about half way down the nail, the split is half of my nail. i dont remember banging it (i did stub my foot on a stool but not badly) and its not bruised but it is sore.
should i leave it alone, put a plaster on or could it be an infection?
i go on holiday in the early hours of the morning.

what sort of holiday? i expect the top half will come off soon, so take something to cover it up if you'll need it.

I don't know what that is caused by, so no real advice, but wanted to say my mum has it, too and hers has since grown back with a split in the middle. It never came off or anything, just kept regrowing like that. Must be something in the nail bed, she can't remember banging it, either. I tend to say it seems to be an injury rather than an infection. Maybe see a GP or podiatrist?
