Please reassure me if you can. I went to see my gp today as my right breast felt different in the last couple of wks. She was very, very calm but said she can feel a mass in my right brest. She has referred me for a mammogram but i didn't ask when it would be. I was so shocked really. Does anyone have any experience? I am 39 and have 2 school age kids. Thanks

Reallyworried
Sorry to hear this. I have no experience but one of my best friends phoned me a couple of weeks in an awful state as there was a lump in her breast. She was referred to an Oncology specialist but luckily it was only a cyst.

I know it is easy for me to say but I hope there is nothing untoward about it.

Please phone to see when the mammogram is - that way at least you can gear yourself up for it.

Hi reallyworriedmum

It will depend on whether the doctor thinks it is urgent.I had a breast lump scare at Christmas and was referred to hospital. As she was quite concerned as she felt the lump was sinister the guidelines stated I had to be seen within two weeks.Went for a mamogram and ultrasound and then seen at breast clinic.Everything turned out fine.I know how worried you are probably feeling.

Hi RWM

I had a mysterious lump in my right breast this time last year. I got myself so freaked out about it that I took myself to casualty in tears. They were really sympathetic - I thought I would be told to go and see my GP and stop time wasting, but I wasn't.

As a few others have said, the likelihood of it being anything cancerous is tiny. Especially if you've ever breastfed - that changes the whole make up of your boobs.

I had 2 biopsies, a core biopsy and 2 ultrasounds over the next few months and they all came back clear. I was too young (28) for a mammogram to be effective. But the ultrasound was the most reassuring - the sonographer was able to say immediately that my mass was definitely there but was entirely normal breast tissue.

Basically some women just develop lumps in their breasts.

Everyone I was seen by was more than helpful and reassuring because they all know that the worst case scenario is going through your mind. It should get dealt with really quickly and tbh if you're really panicked then consider paying to go private if that's an option for you.
