Problems with smear.......starting to worry.

breeze · 19/05/2003 12:37

Been experiencing bleeding in between periods, and the need to pass urine more often, I went to the clinic who rules out any infections, and was advised to go to the doctor and have a smear, even though I was not due one for another 2 years.
I hate the whole process of the smear and the nurse made no effort to distract me or make me feel at home (Although she was not horrid). Before she had done the smear she told me the results would be back in 4 weeks time. After the smear she said you will hear from us in about a weeks time, I asked her why not the 4 weeks as mentioned earlier, she said that she found some red-ness up there and it looks sore and obviously something is not right, at this point I just went into a blind panic and thought of the dreaded (c) word, she told me to try not to worry, and as she was running very late and had a room full of people I left.
Just wanted to know if anyone has experienced anything similar. Telling me not to worry is like telling me not to breathe.

breeze, sorry to hear this and even if you have lots of positive information, fear isn't rational is it? See batey's comments below about her sister though, that was a grade 3 and successfully treated. I had a colposcopy and laser treatment a long time ago, when I was 20 and it wasn't pleasant but it wasn't that terrible, really. Best wishes.

breeze · 30/05/2003 09:54

I also was told that I would have an appointment through in about 1-2 weeks, so whatever happens I will enjoy my holiday .......not.

M2T · 30/05/2003 09:57

Oh breeze I am sorry.

But remember - it is SO easily treatable. Do you know what treatment is required?

breeze · 30/05/2003 09:59

Have to have a colposcopy.

Just snapped at DS and he just told me he thinks I am going to Die, thanks son , I asked him why he thought that and he said because I went to the hospital. Bless him.

Poor wee ds.

WideWebWitch · 30/05/2003 10:02

Breeze, here is the old thread about smear tests. Sorry if you've already seen it but I just skimmed through it and it looks like there's lots of information about what to expect etc. Hope it's reassuring. It is highly unlikely you are going to die, really.

sibble · 30/05/2003 10:02

Dear Breeze
There isn't alot anybody can say to make you feel better at this time. If it is of help CIN 3 is very treatable. Are you under the hospital at the moment. If you are, use the nurses for info and support. I have worked in women's health for over 10 years and that is what we are there for. As questions and fears come into your mind, write them down and ask the nurse next time you call/see them.
Am thinking of you.

breeze · 30/05/2003 16:54

Thanks again for all your kind words, especially www (I did look at the thread but only skimmed, but found it easy to find this time, thank-you) I read the other thread abour your sister batey and this again made me feel much better and a bit more positive, I have printed them off and every time I start to go off on one (quite a lot at the moment) I will read it and feel better.

Megg thanks for today.

I'd just like to say that I'm thinking of you, Breeze, and I hope this will be sorted out very quickly.
Sue.

Tissy · 30/05/2003 17:08

Breeze- I haven't read the other thread and don't have time, but I had CIN3 and a colposcopy and "loop biopsy", and have been clear for 10 years. They've now reduced my smears to every three years.

The colposcopy wasn't too bad in itself- rather undignified, strung up with your legs in the air, though! They do a manual examination first then put a speculum in and then peer at your cervix with a telescope after daubing it with vinegar!! Apparently the vinegar reacts with the abnormal cells and makes them go white, so that the abnormal patch (and it is usually only a small patch)is visible against the pinkness of the normal tissue. If they then want to remove any tissue, they put a local anaesthetic injection in, which is painless (honestly). They can either zap the cells with a laser, or remove them with electrocautery, which is what I had.

I was able to drive myself home (after a cup of tea) and went back to work that afternoon. Don't forget to take 1 or 2 of your usual sanitary pads with you, because the ones the hospital supply are
absolutely horrendous- very thick, no sticky tape and scratchy!

HTH

Good luck!

Oh Breeze, a big cyberhug to you. You have very chance of having successful treatment, just rememeber that all the worrying cells are localised and that you have probably been caught early.

You bloody better try to enjoy your holiday

And on behalf of mumsnet (I hope no one minds!) we're here for you.

batey · 30/05/2003 18:36

Breeze, sorry to hear your news.I know how scary it can be, as I went through every inch of this with my sister. But PLEASE try not to fret too much. IT WILL GET SORTED AND YOU WILL BE FINE. It's good they've spotted it now and you can get treated.Good idea to print this off too.

Sorry have to go, dd2 tired/whingey etc, will try and post later.....

mammya · 30/05/2003 21:45

Breeze
I had the very same diagnosis when I was 25 (20 years ago). Had a colposcopy and then cone biopsy. Had annual smear tests for a few years, then back to three-yearly ones. Didn't hurt at any stage, you will be fine believe me.

breeze · 03/06/2003 15:30

Got date through for colposcopy its 23rd June at 9.40 am, which is good because it is just after my holiday and I have a date to work on and also doctor I saw today and the receptionist in the dept were really nice and helpful. So I have decided I wont worry (well much anyway) until at least after my holiday.

OP posts:
breeze · 06/06/2003 11:11

Just a quick question. I was kind of ok with the colposcopy and possible treatments, until I received the leaflet which showed 4 possible treatments and only 1 being under local and the others under general. I know it does depend of the seriousness of what they find, but ones that have had colposcopy, what treatment did you have.

Similar story to ks for me except I had a cone biopsy after colposcopy in 81. I don't think laser treatment was as common/developed then but I
had a ga.

Bumblelion · 10/06/2003 15:12

Good luck Breeze for the 23rd. I have had two colposcopys in the past and have now been referred to the hospital for a referral because of bleeding. I am going to stop taking the mini pill and have the coil fitted instead. I have got my doctor's letter sitting indoors but I have to phone Bupa and get authorisation and then phone the local private hospital.

(1) I am delaying as if I go now I will have to pay the excess (£150) this month and if the treatment goes on into July I have to pay another excess as it is another calendar year. I know money is not as important as health but I can't afford £300 at the moment.

(2) I am thinking about speaking back to my doctor and just getting referred to my local NHS hospital.

I had my first colposcopy done privately as I was scared and wanted it out of the way a.s.a.p but the second one I had done at my local NHS hospital but it was carried out by the same doctor!!!

Mil · 11/06/2003 07:03

Hi Breeze, Not had time to read all the other threads but wanted to let you know I had a colposcopy and had to have loop diathermy treatment to get rid of abnormal cells. I worried myself stupid despite friends telling me of their experiences and how everything turned out fine in the end. This was 3 years ago when I was 30 and I have had regular smears since then which have all been clear. The doctor performing the operation was SO lovely I wanted to marry him (he was about 60) as he made me feel so relaxed and explained everything so clearly. Good luck and PLEASE try not to worry, like other people have said you will receive the best treatment. Lots of support coming your way!

breeze · 19/06/2003 16:43

Thanks for all your messages of support.

Just a quick question. With regards to the colposcopy, do they do the necessary treatment then and there or do you usually have to go back. Also after treatment, what do I expect. I am supposed to be working (delivering my orders 2 days after) would I still be able to do that.

Am Dreading Monday
