can female sterilisation be done on the NHS? What methods do they use?

I've been trying to convince dh to have the snip for ages. I don't think it's going to work, but I think sterilisation is the best route for us - family finished and no chance I'll want more. (nor dh)

So, can it be done on the NHS? If not, how much does it cost? I believe there are ways of doing it now that are non-invasive and don't require a general anesthetic.

Anyone had it done? What were your experiences?

i know sazm im looking for 1 in a million - if i was stood next to 200 women and a nutter was going to shoot someone in the head as sure as muck is muck it would be my head!

1 in 2000 seems to be the figure quoted for vasectomy, which is better.

sazm · 06/09/2009 20:55

ah lol, am glad about that,
hubby is booked in next week

nappyzoneisback · 06/09/2009 20:56

I am going to have to quote that to dh.

Ah yes, I will tell dh those stats too. I think he would rather chop his own nads off with a rusty knife than get me pg again. And the ease with which I seem to get pg, I would definitely be the 1 in 200.

lol, i must be lucky then lol,it was hubby who took it upon himself to book it!

nappyzoneisback · 06/09/2009 21:20

mine is just very scared about it and blood and gore and has heard the unhelpful accounts of friends who have gone for one - last week after denying he needed a filling for 10 yrs i kid you not he finally went and needed 3 injections to numb one side and had to take himself to bed for a day when he got in - he said as he waslked he would never have a vazzy following that ordeal.

sazm · 06/09/2009 21:29

lol, mine WONT go to the dentist, but this he doesnt mind (atm anyway will see what he is like the morning of it,he is just happy to be getting a week off work!)
yep 2 of the guys he works with have had
it,and they are full of it saying they were back to work that afternoon (very physical job) as if lol, they are trying to look brave!

its the only option for us really as im allergic to everything!and pregnancy really does not agree with me (and we have 3dc!)

nappyzoneisback · 06/09/2009 21:33

oh all our vasectomy people have had infections or balls like marrows.

sazm · 06/09/2009 21:35

yep well our 2 started off saying they were back to work an hour later, now they are saying its like walking with 2 footballs down there!
lol,men eh???

One week exactly I had sterilisation done and wish i hadnt ..!had complications and they could nt insert the needle that pumps the gas into your abdomen[they had a few tries and now have four stitches and very bruised bellybutton that looks a bit wierd still]plus a 8 cm scar[bit like a c section] was in hospital for 3 days, lots and lots of pain, still on painkillers..antibiotics,cant move without pain..trust me to be the unlucky one, everyone else went home that afternoon and didnt even ask for painkillers!!! cant fit into my clothes , my belly is sooo swollen and bruised, cant bear anything against it..Its probably more like a c section im recovering from!!!
Dr actually cut my tubes as she said there is a chance the clips can come off, hence the failure rate!!
At least its done now but wouldnt go ahead again knowing what i do now,but others seemed ok
