I've had this done, they are checking the valve at the top of your stomach to make sure it's working correctly. Ask them to sedate you, you won't remember a thing. They don't do anything unless it's necessary, lazy buggers these doctors!

candyfluff · 28/08/2009 13:58

i am worried about it though ,and will def ask for sedation
how long is the op ?
do i have to stay in or is it a day surgery?
what did they find fluffy ?
and what sort of treatment did you have

It's not an op, you have to not eat before, they put a little cannula in your hand, a bit of sedative, then they spray something into the back of your mouth, I don't remember anything else. I was just there for a few hours, they didn't find anything, I had reflux and abdominal pain with some other tummy problems (diarhhoea etc), I was fully checked over IYWSIM. They didn't find anything, which was good. It only takes about 20 minutes.
I have MS, which is probably what caused my symptoms, I'm not being treated yet, the reflux went away eventually.

alypaly · 28/08/2009 19:13

ita about 10 minutes long and you are given a sedative but are still conscious. Just recently had it done. They are looking for active ulcers in stomach, stomach cancer, oesaphageal ulcers and the sphincters. some consultants take 3 biopsies of the stomach lining to do further tests but it is a minor minor procedure. It was like a production line at my local private hospital...one in..one out all morning. They spray your throat with a cocaine mixture which tastes of bananas and off they go.It is necessary to rule out serious problems...

alypaly · 28/08/2009 19:17

your throat is sore becos of the acid reflux.Prop up your pillows and this will help alot when you sleep. You shouldnt be on ompe for more than 3 months at a time otherwise other bugs breed in your stomach due to the altered ph. Does your reflux mainly happen at night or do you have this during the day. has your doc given you gaviscon to have a night and omeprazole in the morning. I found gavsicon really helped at night but u cant take it at the same time as omeprazole.

candyfluff · 28/08/2009 21:30

thanks for your replies -you have helped me with my fears
i have put pavinf slabs under the head of my bed and more pillows
i get the sore throat all day really but is worse in the mornings ,will nedd to get some more gaviscon ,i have had a whole bottle recently.

OP posts:
alypaly · 29/08/2009 10:57

are u takin it seperately from omeprazole

alypaly · 29/08/2009 10:59

I am a pharmacy dispenser...so if i can help. Are the checking for a hiatus hernia as the sore throat sounds really bad. I bought some gastrocote tablets from the pharmacy where i work and i was chewing those all day. They reallly helped with the burning in my throat

Bucharest · 29/08/2009 16:02

Have they told you to try a low fat diet because they think it might be your gallbladder? I went through all this earlier this year- mine turned out to be helicobacter- in fact I've just been retested and have still got the fecker so started my 2nd dose of antibs this morning.

My doctor told me that if they don't clear the infection then I can look forward to being on omeprazole long term....nice....Tbh, I'm finding pepperming oil capsules (extra strength Holland and Barrett) just as effective as the omeprazole.

candyfluff · 29/08/2009 18:36

well the gp didnt say anything specific
just to try a low fat diet and in a month they will check down my throat.
my dads mum and my mums mum both have hiatus hernia and my dad had the start of stomach ulcers so think its in the family.
taking the gaviscon a long time after the omeprazole like 7 hrs or so .
so suck extra strong mints during the day - they help.
im getting pretty fed up to be honest with you

OP posts:
alypaly · 29/08/2009 18:53

worrying will make you prduce more acid as well. Dont take any ibuprofen( nurofen) or any aspirin based products as these will upset your stomach.

try the gastocote Tablets instead of your peppermints during the day...they worked for me

candyfluff · 31/08/2009 11:25

im thinking now it could be a hiatus hernia
what do they do for that then ?

I think not a great deal- a friend of mine has one, (she also has gastro-reflux disease) and is just on antacids permanently....

cocolepew · 31/08/2009 18:12

I was going to start a thread then I saw this, for the past couple of weeks I have been either feeling sick or actually vomiting. I thought it might be connnected to hot flushes, but now I think gallbladder or ulcer/hernia. I feel like my food is sitting at the top of my stomach, so the more I eat the worse I feel. It's a feeling of being too full. I haven't felt like I have reflux but I have a soreish throat. I have been burping a lot and having (loud) hiccups after eating. Any ideas? Thanks.

Bucharest · 01/09/2009 11:10

That sounds like my helicobacter symptoms- last Christmas, when I first started, I was exactly like that- ask your Gp for a blood test, it's a really common infection (reading the helicobacter foundation website apparently about 50% of the world's population has it in their system, but not everybody has symptoms)It's apparently the only bacteria which can survive in the acid conditions of your stomach- so if the symptoms are upper-stomachy area related (as mine are/were) then it's unlikely, say to be IBS or any of the other nasties that give you wind from various orifaces...
I think if it's your gallbladder, it's much more related to the type of things you eat- fatty stuff, whereas helicobacter is unrelated to what you eat.
Whatever you do, don't google- I'll tell you now (been there done that) that all these symptoms will throw up (if you'll pardon the pun) all kinds of hideous nasties.
There was another thread- ages ago about candida as well being able to affect the stomach in this way.
Try the blood test first though for helicobacter...

FelineFlat · 01/09/2009 11:13

Yes I am on these too. I have a damaged tummy lining. They stop me feeling sick and are a stomach healer.

Does anyone with these problems feel tired ALL THE TIME ? Well, Wed/Thu/Fridays mostly ?

alypaly · 01/09/2009 14:27

alot of drugs can cause tiredness as a side effect. they affect different people in different ways

candyfluff · 27/11/2009 09:18

I was diagnosed with heliocobacter pylori nearly 5 years ago now! Had two boxes of antibiotics, an endoscopy, had my stools tested to rule out Chrons disease (we have it in the family) and another tube put up my bottom to make sure I had no growths there. Found nothing.

In the end they said the endoscopy showed there were no more traces of heliocobacter infection remaining. But I still have the acid reflux, constant wind etc. (It just seems to quieten down and then flare up which it is again now, so i'm going to see the doctor next week for some lansoprazole)

I have the really big Gaviscon bottle right by my bed.

Thing is I do have a hernia. Don't think it's a hiatus - not sure what a hiatus is - but it's poking through my stomach wall and I noticed that everytime I'm really active the symtons start up quite aggressively. But then so does stress and anxiety too, and I've been stressed recently.

Sorry you're suffering with it. It's a long-term bummer. Frankly I don't think doctors know as much about the workings of the stomach in relation to the immune system as they'd like. You might find that beyond the acid suppressents there's not much they can do if the symtons persist. It's frustrating.

candyfluff · 27/11/2009 13:15

thanks shiney - i have been tested for h .pylori and it came back negative.
just got back from the gp - waiting over an hour to go in, she said other than gaviscon advance there isnt anything more to do until my appointment
i dont do pain and its getting me down.
have cut out cheese as i thought that was the problem and i dont smoke or drink so short of giving up eating i dont know what to do.
hmpf

I have probs with this Candy - I've been on omeprazole for four years. I never even had camera down throat, I even paid to see specialist privately was just told to keep taking the pills.

I may be changed onto something else as doc now thinks I'm taking too much.

It's crap isn't it? FWIW eating a low fat diet does help me I think it's because high fat food is harder to digest so sits in the stomach longer. I have a friend who has the same thing and her doctor is always going on about her weight. In my case they don't even have that because I'm the correct weight for my height.

brettgirl2 · 27/11/2009 17:26

I'm neg for hpylori btw
