Hair loss - is this too much

My hair is falling out. I was kind of expecting it, but the amount and the length of time it's been going on for is getting worrying. I have always had very thick hair, but you can actually see my scalp at some points now and it's noticeably thinner. Every day in the shower it comes out in huge amounts, making a walnut sized ball when I scrunch it all up after fishing it out of the plughole. Every time I run my hands through my hair at least3/4 hairs come out - which adds up over the course of a day! And it's been like this for 3 weeks now.

I have stopped bf last week - but it was falling out before that. And ds had been having only 2 feeds a day for the last 4 months, so there doesn't seem to be a correlation there. I know it's normal to lose hair post pregnancy/feeding, but I didn't lose anywhere near this much after my first baby. Should I worry?

Hmm, overactive thyroid can cause unwanted weight loss as well as the sweating I believe. Mine is the opposite so I still have to watch out for weight gain. I didn't have a period until after I stopped bfing so that doesn't necessarily have to mean anything. I would ask when you go back if they don't mention it. A thyroid test is easily done with your blood work, but has to be specially ordered as it is not in the normal battery of tests that they do. I would suspect that they have ordered it, but have learned from experience not to take things for granted with the medical profession!

hi I've posted several times on this subject because all my hair fell out 9 months after having dd..coinciding with falling pg with ds. Just waiting to find out if it will go again as ds is 5 months and recently developed bald patches. Really don't want to be bald again especially because I'm going back to work next month. I'm a teacher in a secondary school and feel apprehensive about returning to work anyway!

...and was wondering if this has happened to anyone else? What treatment anyone can recommend? I had no tests last time due to pregnancy, does anyone know what could cause it or is it just 'one of those things' as the doc told me?!

gengis, was it just the hair on your head or did it include eyebrows, etc.? If so it could have been alopecia. I know that some use steroids as a treatment for that and you should be able to do that while pregnant if it did happen again, although your doctor would have the last word, obviously as it would depend on how far along you were.
