Anyone had a Mirena coil to stop PMS - does it work?

GP has suggested the mirena coil as I have very bad PMS and can't tolerate contraceptive pills.

Has anyone had this - either for PMS or just for contraception, and is it okay?

I had one fitted about 2 months ago. I have always had really horrific pains, and ended up in A&E a few months ago so bit the bullet and made an appointment. Having it fitted was HORRENDOUS (but there was a thread on here the other day that made me realise I was the exception, rather than the rule) BUT it was 100% worth it. I have had two very very light periods since, and no pains or misery or moodiness (all of which I was prone to) I would heartily recommend it.

There's been heaps on here lately or maybe since I had one fitted a few months ago I've started noticing them. I had mine fitted for heavy periods although do get fairly bad PMS.

From following the threads it seems everybody seems to have such varied effects. IMO the mirena seems to be the contraceptive equivalent to dishing out prozac at the moment, everybody's GP is on the band wagon as a cure for all.

I'm not sure is my rather unhelpful answer. I've bled for about 10 out of the past 12 weeks albeit much lighter, I've put on some weight (it's winter here so debatable whether it's all the winter stodge but don't think so), and I've still been pretty irrationally psycho (drove car into bollard coming out of car park last month as just couldn't coordinate.

I decided to give it a go and have it out if it didn't agree with me as for every person who had a horror story there was another who was shouting how good it was.

I'm going to give it the 6 months the gynaecologist suggested but if I'm still the same it's coming out.

Sibble - you see, that's my worry. I have massive problems with the contraceptive pill - I bleed continually, have major mood issues and crave sugar continually and I don't know how difficult it would be to get it out once they've got it in.

I'm also slightly freaked out by the idea of having something actually inside me.

But the alternatives are uterine ablation, (burning the inside of the uterus with microwaves) or hysterectomy.

Either that or I have six more children and breastfeed them (that should sort things for oooh ten or so years till I'm old enough to be menopausal!!!!

Like sibble says, I think it's very individual how if affects you. I had mine about 18 months ago and the bleeding settled very quickly within a week or two. Now I scarcely bleed at all which is great.

Downside, I have put on about a stone! I think the PMS has reduced to some extent but it is still there unfortunately.

Hi I have a mirena coil fitted about 2 and a half years ago because of heavy periods. Never used pill before cos never suited me so was a bit worried. But have to say its been great. Took about 6 months for pains and spotting to settle down but since have had no periods (great) and it did calm my PMS down to. On the downside - have been bit depressed and put on a little weight but more likely due to present circumstances rather than the coil. Give it a go I'd say
