help - 1 yr old ds has high temp (39.3) (came on this morning) and runny nose. NHS direct say they are too busy to take calls! have stripped him off, given calpol, but no change. worried it may be swine flu, but hoping it could be normal child illness. should i take him in to walk in centre or treat at home?

Phone your out of hours GP service.

how long since you gave the calpol? With stubborn temps they often recommend alternating baby nurofen and calpol. Can you ring out of hours gp for advice? They'll probably advise alternating the meds and waiting and seeing. How is your ds in himself? Watch out for any floppiness or high screaming, if that happens or if his temp keeps rising I'd take him to A&E.

thanks - out of hours service round here directs us to NHS direct - who say they are too busy to take calls! local community hospital are the same - they took our details and still haven't called back- awful service. we have alternated nurofen & calpol in meantime and now temp down to 38. ds is cuddly/sleepy but not moaning anymore. hopefully just a normal illness. thanks for advice on what to watch out for re. going to a&e.
