My baby was born 2 months premature on 10 April and is having a lot of difficulty tolerating milk (mine). SHe has had several bouts of suspected NEC but has recovered well when feeds are stopped and antibiotics given. We are now on the fourth attempt at feeding and I'm feeling very anxious that it will end up the same way as the first 3 with a very ill baby. Would be great to hear of other similar experiences which turned out OK in the end - anyone out there?

Are they giving your baby probiotics? It might be worth asking about this. Recent research has shown that it is very beneficial for babies- especially if they are being given antibiotics. I'm afraid I don't have the reference to hand but I know a study was published about 18 months ago.

DS2 had to have a series of antibiotics when he was 6 weeks and becuase of problems we had with ds1 I wanted to give him probiotics- my HV was very helpful intracking down recommendations.

Obvioulsy your situation is very different- and NEC is a different ball game but it might be worth trying to talk to the drs about it- they can really help with gut problems.

I'll have a search later and see if I can find the reference- might give you something to wave under the drs noses.

Hang in there! And thinking of you!

Had a quick scan and found this (bit about probiotics towards the bottom)

www.indianpediatrics.net/mar2002/mar-229-237.htm

and another paper which showed that probiotocs had been useful in animal models for NEC.

I'm sure there's more out there- might be worth asking about them.

I don't understnad what is happening with my links at the moment- they keep not working. Search for NEC probiotocs under google and you should find some references!
