Excessive weeing - help please!!!

Ds2 (3.5) has over the last few days been weeing constantly. Last night he went 4 times within 20 minutes of going to bed (and he did go, it wasn't just a ploy to get up). His nappy, which is normally fairly dry in the morning, was saturated. Since dinner (about 40 minutes ago) he has gone six times - during dinner he went twice. In town yesterday we had to find a toilet three times in rapid succession (and the ones in Tesco are horrid) He's going more than me!

Dh has tested a urine sample and he hasn't got an infection.

So heeeeelp! Should I be worried? Should I take him to the doctor (he's well otherwise and doesn't have any discomfort while passing urine)? Am I a terrible Mum for wailing "you cannot be serious" in best John McEnroe style every time he yells "I need a wee wee!" ?

This sounds all too familiar Marthamoo - and yes, I used to lose my rag and wail at ds too!

I don't know why he had periods of doing this, and again like your ds he had urine samples etc - several infact...they all came back negative.

I was on first name terms with the incontinence nurse because I saw her so often! He would go about 20 times at least in a school day, but we just couldn't figure out why.

This is no help at all except to say it was just a phase - but it did come back quite a few times. Now he is older (8 in Sept) he can hold it (phew) but I remember those days well.

I would run it by the doctor to see if they can shed any light on it - and good luck, I know how testing this is (especially when most public loos are disgusting).

"just a phase"...words that strike dread into every parent's heart! I'll see how he goes over the next few days then I think I'll take him to the GP, as you suggest.

Has anyone else got anything to add to this? I am at the end of my tether - he is going about 6-10 times an hour. If I try and get him to hang on "you really don't need a wee wee again...let's do x/y/z instead" he gets hysterical. He had to be brought out of Tumbletots 4 times yesterday - it's only 3/4s of an hour. And it's getting to the point where I don't want to go to the shops with him (well, no-one wants to go to the shops with a 3 year old but ykwim) Help!

So he has been tested for diabeties hasn't he?

Is he drinking water or squash or fizzy drinks

We find DS wees more after anything that is NOT water or milk

I would get it looked at as passing too much urine needs to be investigated as much as too little

The thought of diabetes hadn't even crossed my mind . He has water and fruit juice (no squash, lemonade is a treat).

He doesn't have a urine infection - dh is a microbiologist and he's tested a couple of samples.

I think I will see the GP about it. Thanks.

Marthamoo, dd2 was a bit like this, though never quite so bad as your poor ds. In fact her teacher at school said she had never known a child need the loo quite so often as dd2 in 10 years she had been teaching! Infection tests came back negative, and the gp suggested in the end that she just had a very small bladder, and that encouraging her to hold on, even just for a minute each time, would help encourage the bladder to stretch.

Fast forward three years - she still goes to the loo more than any child I know, and finds it hard to go more than an hour without going, but can "hang on" much better than she used to, particularly on car journeys. She is also dry at night (though she wasn't until she was over 5). It became "manageable" rather than "better" IYSWIM.

Still think you are right to see the GP, but if other tests come back negative, then this could be the reason.

i do think it's worth getting him checked for diabetes moo, as one of the symptoms is weeing a lot. is he very thirsty too? best to put your mind at rest i think.

RTKM, it's OK I don't really think he's diabetic - he doesn't seem tired (the opposite, in fact) and he doesn't drink excessively.

Thanks for that miaou, it's reassuring. I had thought about the bladder capacity thing and drinking more to increase it (ds1 was very late to be dry at night - has only just done it, aged 7 and trying to increase bladder capacity was one of the recommendations I had for him). The thing is, that this excessive weeing is quite recent - I'm tending more towards a psychological reason. He went through a stage of wetting his pants 6/7 times a day and I wonder if this is the opposite side of the coin to that.

Honestly, my kids and their bladders...

make sure he is getting enough to drink! I know that sounds daft but its true!! Also is he emptying his bladder fully?

I don't know, mandy - some of his wees are big wees (he has a potty downstairs so I can judge!) and others are barely a dribble. It's as though he has to go even if he has a vague inkling that he may need to. He drinks plenty. I'm stumped - and I will see the GP. Should have done it a month ago, really.

I remember my dd doing this when she was about 6 and getting really upset. It did pass. there was no reason behind it either!! I used to get a bit cross at first but then I would just say sit there as long as it takes or off you go then!! It did stop..honest!

Thanks, mandy. I'm trying not to get cross as I'm sure it doesn't help but it is so aggravating sometimes - ie., you leave your queue in Tesco when he yells "I need a wee wee!" - take him - recover trolley - stand in another queue - and just as you're about to start unloading onto the conveyor belt - "I need a wee wee, Mummy!" Grrrrrrrrr.

I don't think so - he seems happy at pre-school, rest of the time is with me, home life is settled...but he's three, who knows?
