traumatised by dropping baby

had an absolutely horrible morning - my husband fainted, keeled over and dropped our 5month old son - he (son) was absolutely fine, just a small bump or two, checked over by doc and he's fine. but husband and i are so upset!!!! i've never seen my husband so upset, he felt so awful. got him checked over too, he fainted becuase got up too quickly having not had any food / drink, and has low blood pressure. so obviously we're going to be really careful from now on.
i just can't stop re-living it over and over in my mind.

Don't think about it anymore, these things happen. DS fell from the top of the stairs being very young. I remember his head hitting several steps before hitting the banisters and falling flat on the floor. He couldn't cry or move.

The ambulance arrived and by the time he was finally checked at A&E he was so mobile they thought I was an PFB mother making a fuzz out of nothing

its only natural but you have to stop all was ok it could have been worse but it wasn't don't focus on what could have been

i fell over when ds was only few weeks old slipped on floor he went flying luckily caught him on way down both ok but you do think what could have happened but main thing is it didnt so tell him to not give himself a hard time accidents happen and they will do yet falling off sofas or beds etc all is well

oh you poor things!! Scary isn't it. I did drop my dd from the sofa when she was little, then i bounced her off the bed - both times it was actually my fault for being less than vigalent. This was totally not your DHs fault, i do completely understand why you are traumatised - but DS is FINE, DH is fine, all is well. Be kind to yourselves and treat yourselves to a nice meal and a bottle of wine tonight xxx

You are going to get a flood of people coming on here sying they did something similar, child was fine, parents were a wreck.

My story. I tripped coming down the stairs carrying dd when she ws 6 months old, dropped her she fell down thestairs and bounced head first of a radiator, and was fine. It took me weeks to recover. I slept on the sofa with her in the travel cot downstairs for days as I was too afraid to take her upstairs.

Hope you and dh recover soon.

me too. DS decided to ride his wheely horse DOWN the stairs... i'd only removed the stair gate 2 weeks before and had no idea he'd do such a daft thing.

I can still hear the noise as his head hit the wall at the end. Oh god it was awful. he was fine, cried and had a huge lump but I had nightmares for weeks after.

I dropped dd1 TEN years ago but I still remember it. Caught my foot in the buggy as I went to put her in it and fell forward with her underneath. She hit her head on the bar underneath a chair and sort of cut/dented the front of her head. Terrified I ran out of the house and carried her to A&E 10 minutes walk (or 7 minutes run) away. Once there I plonked my now perfectly happy if a bit confused toddler on the reception desk. The woman on the other side said 'what can we do for you' and I opened my mouth to tel her and was gone. I cried and cried and all I could say was ' I dropped her'. Bless her she led me straight through to a cubicle where the staff were wonderful. Took a look at dd and spent ages reassuring the big drippy heap that was me!

These things happen and nobody is to blame. Try to let go of it a bit but you'll never forget it. I'll still be telling people about that one when dd1 is 45.

My stories..

Df didn't strap DD in to her highchair once and she escaped and landed on her head on the kicthen floor, shes fine.

I got my toe caught in my PJ bottoms a few weeks ago and toppled over holding DS and dropped him on his head, called ambulance in an absolute panic, went to A&E just to get checked over and hes fine too !

The DR told me it happens to loads of people so don't blame yourself ( or let DH !)... babies are hard as nails

I was walking away from dd a few days ago and she chased after me, tripped over something I had left on the floor and smacked straight into the door frame. Enormous bump on head, terrible bruising, two black eyes and a bloody nose.

I picked her up, screamed at dh to 'get the f*ing keys', ran out to the car (barefoot and underdressed in a storm) and stood there kicking the car door whilst sobbing and babbling. DH when he saw the state of dd was much the same and law-abiding copper that he is broke every speed limit there was on the way to the local surgery. Not my local surgery btw and I ran in there with a bloody dd, no shoes remember, crying and unable to explain what was wrong apart from 'oh God oh God oh God'.

She's fine. Absolutely fine. Me? Still can't talk about it without crying.

Sure way to kill a thread actually - post one asking people to sign in if they have never dropped any of their kids.....the tumbleweed will be blowing round there pretty quick!

I've never dropped dd I have to say.

DH has though. Hopefully that's our quota fulfilled for this child.

Dh once threw dd up in the air when she was only a few months old and of course he didn't catch her, she landed on the floor. I still remember shouting and screaming at him for hours on end. Dd was of course fine.

I used baby nail scissors to cut ds's fingernails when he was a couple of weeks old, of course I nicked the skin and the blood just would not stop. It eventually stopped after half and hour, I was still sobbing hours later.

My Mum still stresses about it 35 years later

I appear to have escaped unscathed.

soh - love your barefoot babbling story! Reminds me of me - 1/2 way to A&E dd stopped crying - because, I now see, that she was happy being cuddled and jogging along the road. Of course at the time I thought she was going quiet because she was blacking out and so I was begging her to stay awake as we hurtled along the pavements...

Northernlurker, I just chuckled at that. It's not funny of course, I just see myself in it. DD fell asleep about an hour after hurting herself which was to be expected as she was tired. I kept wanting to prod her in case it was a coma. DH had to physically hold me back.

It's funny in retrospect - because we know they were ok. I laugh about it now. God forbid something was actually wrong it would be the worse day of our lives wouldn't it - but we're lucky and this is what this thread is about - most people will be lucky with this most of the time so it's good to look back in affectionate amusement - and be thankful we can.

I was the same with Ds. He'd just fed so was dozing off.. I thought his brain was swelling up so kept trying to prise open his eyes to check his pupils like i've seen on casulty

DD1 bounced between the side of the changing table and the wall like a billiard ball at about that age. can't remember how, but it was dh's fault
no lasting damage!
we laugh about it now....

oh thank you, thank you - feeling so much better. i can see we got off lightly compared to some of you!!!!! i have no idea at all how i remained calm but i guess because nothing too serious.
i am resisting the urge to keep prodding him but i am sneaking in and spying on him in his cot a lot.
it just makes me realise even more how precious he is.
i was so upset too to see my husband so upset - barely even seen him shed a tear before but he SOBBED. horrible.
