PAIN IN LEFT SIDE

For the last few days I have had a pain that comes and goes in my left side above my hip. The pain is worse when I go for a wee it feels likea stitch pain.Ive also had afew period like pains over the last few days.

Any ideas?

IBS?
ovarian cyst?
muscle strain?
UTI?

Hi, i had the exact same thing a few weeks ago, it was sore to press on the lower left side of my abdomen and the more i thought about it the more it hurt and the more i panicked! i went to see my GP and he suggested that it was a bladder infection and to drink plenty so after resuts came back from the urine sample saying i was clear of infection the doctor sent me for a scan the next day,mainly to put my mind at ease because he said it was just a precaution to do the scan, by now the pain was pretty horrendous and i was having trouble walking and moving around but the sonographer checked the baby which was fine (and a little boy!!) and also checked the ovaries which were fine, he said that this kind of pain was common and its just bad luck really with your body stretching and adapting to having a rapidly growing baby living in it! So a few weeks later the pain has eased off, but i would say the best thing to do is not to worry and go and see your doctor just to be safe. Hope you are ok x

I have IBS and get pain like stitch on left hand side , just below ribs above hips and is sometimes ,and can make me double over with pain and only goes if i lye down and relax as the colon muscle has gone into a spazam and needs to relax , i do get alot of wind towhen this happens ... this is what causes the pain .

but if persists and does'nt go away i would go to docs to get checked out .

I was hoping it would go away on its own (as you do) it doesnt seem to be as bad and as often as before but I will make an appointment to see dr i think. I woke up last night needing loo (which i never do) but when i went and straight after i started getting chronic stomach cramps to the point where i could hardly walk. I managed to get back in bed and after a while of just sitting holding my stomach i managed to lie down. The pain then eased. Ive never had this before but i feel okay today which im very surprised at.

Thumwitch, i had a scan in february for lower back pain, which showed a tiny cyst. Dr said didnt want to do anything because it would go away on its own.

I really suffer with bad lower back pain few days before my period and at ovulation to the point where i can hardly walk, sit, stand thats why i had my scan in feb.

Mortica, it sounds really like endometriosis, which can give bladder problems and pain. I had something similar. The bad lower back pain and pain at ovulation is typical. Read up on it here and see if it sounds like you. It is usually not visibile on an ultrasound scan, though a cyst is another indicator that you may have it. If your pain is that bad, they should not just be leaving it - they should give you a laparoscopy to see what's in there (not a major procedure).
Don't worry too much - if it is endometriosis they can alleviate the symptoms, but they need to diagnose it first. Some doctors are bad at taking these sort of symptoms seriously.

Hmm I have wondered whether I've had endometrios (sp). Get intense pain at ovulation plus imtermittent lower back pain.

But usually only on left hand side. Ovulation pain can be either side and sometimes leaves me doubled up.

Not sure why I ignored it for so long.

Vigilante, thanks ive just had a good read of that. I have recently been considering that endo may be the cause but then thought it cant be because i do not have heavy bleeding or mid cycle bleeding. But that web page says that not all suffers have that. All the rest of the symptoms i have.

Sincitylover, whats your pain like? is it in your lower back or pelvic region? Does it effect your sitting, standing or walking?

Lower back most def usually on left hand side - def itensifies with ovulation in fact I will chart it from now on.

I can get relief by pressure being exerted on it, twisting my knees in the opposite direction or laying on hard floor with feet up against a wall. It's like it needs to be stretched out. Also find cat position or pulling knees up to chest helps.

My ovulation pains start with general lower abdominal pain then move are very sharp stabbing pains sometimes hardly able to walk. I am also incredibly bloated/windy at ovulation Usually take nurofen if I can't bear them any longer.

Unusually I had sex the month before last when actually ovulating and it was very painful in one position had to stop . That's never happened before. But libido increases considerably just beforehand as you might expect.

Thankfully had no probs conceiving ds1 and ds2.

Mortica, it's a really weird illness, you can get any of those symptoms or all of them or none of them at all. Unfortunately, awareness seems to be so bad amongst GPs that you might still have trouble getting taken seriously, but it's worth fighting for a referral to a gynaecologist so that they can look into it and treat you. I find it helps a lot if you read up as much as possible on it yourself. Another good thing to do is go along to your local support group (whereabouts are you, if you don't mind telling?) as there will be people there who can tell you which gynaecologist to get referred to, whom to avoid, which GPs have a specialist interest in it, etc. It's ok to go along if you haven't been diagnosed - they should be very welcoming. Hi Vigilante, thsnks for the link. The nearest to me is Birmingham. I am already seeing a gyno as i was diagnosed with a tiny ovarian cyst and a slight prolapse but apparently the pain i am having is notcaused by these.

I am waiting to see him again but in the meantime i think i will go and see my dr and discussit with her first.

hi mortica, i am a pharmacy dispenser, not a doctor, but it sounds alot like a kidney/urine infection. Get a bottle from your local pharmacy and take it to your gp, he can test it with a urine stick and then send it for culture. they will probably give you some trimethoprim to start. Dont delay otherwise it goes more into your kidneys
