Wisdom Teeth being removed... how bad is it?

Hi, i'm having 4 wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow plus one other next to it. I'm so scared and worried about it, im being put to sleep for it (thankfully) but i cant help but worry about it. Two of the teeth are under the gums so they will need to cut them and this will mean having stitched.
I was just wondering what everyone elses experiences were with this and if there are any tips for coping with the pain?

You'll be fine - esp as you're going to be asleep. Be prepared for some swelling after though -I looked like Henry VIII after I had mine out. I was so glad to see the back of the f*ckers I didn't care what I looked like - had had a number of infections and it was a massive relief when they were removed.

The only thing to watch out for is infections afterwards - make sure you gargle with salt water regularly afterwards, after you eat or drink anything.

i had it done 18 years ago now so can't remember all specifics. are you in or out patient? i was able to smoke in the loos the following morning so it can't have been that bad.

i had to have mine exploded with a chisel and i did not go out for a week. it heals fairly quickly inside the mouth but the trauma to your face is not good.

they'll give you painkillers. don't eat crisps!

well, without being to scary, for me, it was not fun.

they had to do the same for me (had impacted wisdom teeth under the gums), and so they had to do strange things to my jaw to get them out (AFAIK........was under a GA).

the recovery for the first 2 days was not too bad, but then next 5 days were pretty painful (altho that said, I was 16 at the time............my version of pain was pretty mild at that point. since having children I have altered somewhat IYGWIM).

eating was hard............soft stuff only for the first week.........noodles, sloppy mash, scrambled egg, ice cream...that type of thing.

and then the bruising is pretty shocking...........I looked like a hamster and had little old ladies fussing on the bus the first day I ventured out.

i had a lower right impacted wisdom tooth taken out with local anaesthetic taken out 18 months ago. it was not much fun being awake for it as it took about 40 mins for the dentist / surgeon to hack it out in bits. One stich was a bit too tight and it kept bleeding on and off for a week so I went back and he snipped the stitch out and it was fine after that.

TBH the pain and discomfort of having them out is less than when they hurt in your mouth. Get loads of soup and ice cream in.

May I ask how come they are taking all of them out in one go. My remaining 3 are all impacted and give me grief every so often but the top two are slightly in my sinuses so they don't want to touch them, have to wait for them to get really bad apparently .

OMG, just rememered the bruising and swelling I had on my jaw and down my neck, the tooth root was squashing a nerve, so it got battered when the dentist took the tooth out and caused a massive bruise. I was the Elephant Lady .

I had all four out at once when I was 17, none had come through yet. I was told I'd be having 'twilight' anaesthesia so I'd be awake enough to respond to instructions, and was nervous about that, but woke up and didn't think they'd done anything!

Basically what the others said. There is bruising, sometimes visible on your cheeks (I didn't get this, but my boyfriend did). Eat cold stuff and use ice packs on the swelling, and expect to be uncomfortable for about a week. Watch out for food getting stuck in the empty sockets.

And don't kiss anyone, it hurts! I was rehearsing for a play when I had it done, and could just about spit out my lines. Then we got to the kissing bit and I hissed 'don't touch me!' at my friend playing the other part.

Hmm. This subject a bit like childbirth in the old days - nobody tells you what it's really like so comes as a big shock! I had impacted wisdoms removed years ago, under general in hospital - very swollen, bruised and sore afterwards. Also bled like a pig so had to stay in overnight. Was v shocked by the bruising on my CHEST, which they said was where the surgeon knelt/leaned on me for better leverage!!!

Thing is, you are BOUND to have a better time than I did, so don't worry! And like someone said, if you've been through childbirth then everything has a different perspective.....good luck.

I'm having them all out in one go becuase i'm terrified of the dentist (even though he's lovely) and they said i could have it in two goes but the problem is i know i wouldn't go back for the second go if it was painful so it's best i have it all done on the same day.
i don't think i've ever been so worried!
They did attempt to take them out with a local but i had a panic attack and they couldn't do it.
do they give you good painkillers or shall i stock up on them?

and getting mine out was a doddle. in fact i was dying to get the buggers out - they'd got infected and i was sick of the pain!

try not to worry. lots of paracetamol/ibruprofen (sic...spelling is wrong i know sorry) and theyll give you instructions on how to care for the gory stumps afterwards. good luck. x

yes ok with childbirth, but then you (hopefully) get a baby afterwards. i didn't even get teeth and was very cross about that.
