Squint?? Reassurance required please!

Ok, I have convinced myself that DS has a squint, going to pop him along to the HV on Monday - which is something in itself as I haven't seen one for about 5 months! But I'm worried about what it will mean if he does? Do they still wear patches? Glasses? Other treatments? Also, I'm sure when DS was first born and the HV took over our care she was concerned that SIL had a squint as a child. I thought that must mean that it is genetic, but MIL says not - didn't want to cause a scene and make it look like I am laying blame but am I right?? As you can tell - I know nothing about squints and am getting myself in a bit of a lather worrying about it.

dd2 has a very slight squint, noticable when she is tired. they just do eye checks on here. nothing to it.

I don't know that it is that slight - it seems quite noticeable now I have noticed it IYSWIM! Thanks Misdee - I suppose as long as the eyesight isn't affected there needs be no real treatment?

My best friend DD has a squint and wears glasses

Anyway she has just been told to wear a patch for 2 hours a day cos the other one is starting to be lazy

She is nearly 7 years

The patch is cute though and sort of slots over the lens of her glasses

She is supposed to watch TV and play games etc with it on

some patch9ing may be nesscery. mieows dd is 'patched'. her squint is wuite bad really, very noticable if she isnt wearing her glasses. (she has worn glasses since she was a baby)

Thank you!! Sounds awful I know but just don't want a pair of glasses on my lovely little DS's face!! I know that makes me seem terrible and superficial but it's how I feel.

i have a problems with my eyes not focusing onb the same point, not a squint but a focus problem. no-one else in the family has squints on our side, but dh family did.

I've looked it up and it can be genetic. Also said that it can be normal in babies up to 2 to 4 months, DS is only 6 so maybe might still grow out of it? [hopeful emoticon] If not then maybe they could do treatment (ie, patch) before school cause I really worry about bullying!! You must all think I'm such a nightmare on here!

Can you get it checked out before you worry too much about patches etc? Ds1 had a 'squint' and was referred to opthalmology about it. It turns out he has a condition called Duane's syndrome, which basically means that one of the eye muscles doesn't work properly. His right eye doesn't pull to the right, so he has to turn his head to compensate. Unlike a squint, it can't be corrected with a patch and will always be with him, but is barely noticable to anyone else but me! That said, it hasn't caused him any actual sight problems. His vision is fine and he has regular checks for that.
So what I guess I'm saying is to try not to worry before you have anything to worry about iyswim. She may or may not require treatment, but if you get it checked out, then at least you'll know what you're dealing with. HTH

your not a nightmare. i'm worried about my dd1 being bullied at school because of her eczema.

btw, I noticed this when ds1 was very young and asked the GP who said just that - that lots of babies have squints that correct themselves, but I knew this was not going to correct itself and my instinct was right. He was nine months old before he was referred.

Friends DD doesn't wear patch at school

just couple of hours when at home so her friends don't see it

She has DSyndrome as well but don't think that is connected

Thanks everyone. Yes Aero, I know I am running away with myself, I am well known for it! My mind whirrs and whirrs round with things untill I've worked myself up into a wonderful quandry!! Thank you for your help and hopefully if there is a problem we will be able to get it sorted/diagnosed/treated promptly.

I do know it's hard not to panic though. I worry too, and at times have been the world's worst, but it is usually when there is something very wrong, like when a bad cough is actually pneumonia and not a virus and the Dr isn't listening!!! I try not to worry about the smaller things until they get big, and that's when I panic, but then I worry if I could have shouted louder sooner!

My ds had a squint. At 3.5 we took him to gp who referred him to optometrist at hospital (who can test young children properly) and they prescribed glasses. He looks totally gorgeous in them (make his big brown eyes look even bigger) and is perfectly happy wearing them. Dd (2) is now begging to be allowed to have a pair too. Unfortunately for her, I don't think she's going to need them as she doesn't have a squint.

My dd1 has a squint and has woren glasses since she was 4 months old, she looks so sweet in them, Ds also wear glasses and he also looks lovely.

She was diagnosed very young then SM? Am I right thinking that the glasses are not likely to be permanent? DP sister no longer has to wear hers.

Dd1 is longsighted too, and has abnormal shaped eyeballs, as well as the squint, so her glasses will be perm. unforturely. she is so used to them now, we have no problems.
