OK - How common are worms?

DD seems to be getting worms regularly. She is 5. No one else in the family has any symptoms. Is it really common and just not talked about because of the stigma attached to it?

its really really common but yes there is a stigma attached as i found out when i rang school when DD got them - to be told by the bloody haughty cow in the office that she had never heard of it before!

i just have a family pack of tablets in at all times....first hint and its down the hatch, bedding changed and towels all on boil washes and disinfect toilet, door handles etc etc. i now just keep my mouth shut and deal with it!

5 yr olds have their hands alternately in the sandpit, in the play-dough, holding friends' hands, then in their mouths. hence worms very common.

we had them every term for a year and a half, but so far no sign since easter.

what an idiot in school office, pickyvic.

btw, good point that pacificDogwood makes, even if other family members don't seem to have symptoms, if you don't treat everyone there is a risk that someone in the family will pass them on again.

My kids haven't had them to my knowledge but I have I swear that I got them from under cooked pork chop and I have never had any since .

We are a really clean family, I regularly shower my boys, they know they have to wash their hands after the loo but its a bit like nits, you can't really help it if you get them, they're every where !

Sorry if this sounds stupid - how would I know if my child has worms. DDs are 7 and 5 and I have never come across them - maybe I haven't spotted the signs. What are the symptoms, do you see them, does it affect childrens appetite.

If they have an itchy bum a lot and sometimes you can see them. They come out at night and lay there eggs around the anus (which is why they get itchy) hence kids scratch their bums, get the eggs under their nails and ongoes the spread.

yep itching at night is very common....also if you can stomach it you can check their stools for what look like white bits of cotton...and you need to treat the whole family at once so avoid passing it back and forth. its best not to think about it!

Thanks for all your replies. This is me just getting back on the laptop after a very busy weekend.

We were all treated the last time and I will treat us all again.

Pickyvic - that's a good idea to have a family pack in at all times, will try to buy 2 packs tomorrow.
