Heat or ice after massage?

I've had a very deep and painful massage today for a chronic upper back problem. The masseur recommended ice for after-care but a physio I've seen before said I should always use heat to encourage the muscles to stretch. I'm confused - any thoughts?

read this information on when to use heat and when to use ice.
Tbh, if I had given a treatment that was as painful as the one you have just had sounds, I would have recommended using either tiger balm or ibuprofen gel.

I think maybe if it is still really sore the ice would be the way to go for now to reduce inflammation (or get tiger balm or ibuprofen gel to achieve the same thing)
