My ds1 has just had a fixed brace fitted. He says it really hurts his gums when he puts his teeth together, and is reduced to smoothies and soup to eat. How long is it likely to hurt this much? Is tehere anything we can do to make it a bit easier?

I remember having fixed braces top and bottom when I was a kid years ago. I remember each visit I had to the orthodontist he would tighten it up and it did ache for a short while but did settle.
I don't know if he is having problems with the brace rubbing on his mouth at all but I remember I did and they used to give some red wax stuff to stick over the brace and it was really soothing.

oh sparkler I had that red wax stuff too, but it always came off!

The aching used to last maybe for a day or so, perhaps a little longer... but paracetamol ought to help.
